Wheaton Rallies Past Stonehill, 5-4

Lyons erase 2-1 deficit after doubles with wins at top four singles matches

NORTON, Mass. (March 27, 2013) – Stonehill College, ranked tenth in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional rankings, dropped a tough 5-4 decision to Wheaton College in non-conference men's tennis action at Clark Tennis Courts this afternoon.

Junior Dan Sharon (Santa Monica, Calif./Brentwood School) led Wheaton to the win as a double-winner. He teamed up with classmate Ned Terrace (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greely) for the Lyons lone doubles win with a 9-7 decision at No. 2. Sharon then led the comeback with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles over Stonehill senior Chris Martin (Darien, Conn./Darien).

Freshmen Jonah Feit (Los Angeles, Calif./Milken Community) and David Gassen (Dusseldorf, Germany) clinched the win for Wheaton with their victories at No. 1 and 2 singles, respectively. Feit won a back and forth 6-1, 6-7, 7-5 decision over Stonehill sophomore Eric Ringstad (Fairbanks, Alaska/Monroe Catholic), while Gassen rallied for a 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 victory over junior Nick Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford). Freshman Will White (Nantucket, Mass./Cape Cod Academy) contributed a 6-2, 6-2 win over freshman Philip Klados (Lake Forest, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) at No. 3 singles.

Junior Brett Armstrong (Manville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) was a double-winner to lead Stonehill. He and Klados combined for an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles and then notched a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles over Wheaton senior Dennis Scarpa (Cheshire, Conn./Xavier). Sophomore Jared Drzal (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) posted a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles over Terrace for the Skyhawks. Ringstad and Martin clinched a 2-1 advantage for Stonehill after doubles play with their 9-8 (7-4) victory over Feit and White at No. 1.

Stonehill (13-5, 5-1 NE-10) is off until Wednesday, April 3, when it visits Southern New Hampshire University, ranked fifth in the East Region, for a key NE-10 matchup at 3 p.m. The Skyhawks return home on Saturday, April 6, to host Le Moyne College at 11 a.m. Wheaton (4-2, 0-0 NEWMAC) hosts MIT for its Conference opener on Saturday at 1 p.m.
