Skyhawks fall to Midwest region's seventh-ranked team
WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 5, 2013) – Grand Valley State University, ranked seventh in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional rankings, cruised to a 9-0 victory over Stonehill College, ranked ninth in the ITA East Regional rankings, in non-conference men's tennis action at John Tiedtke Courts on the campus of Rollins College today.
Juniors Andrew Darrell (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix) and Bryan Hodges (Bloomfield, Mich./Andover), sophomores Francis Bertrand (Repentigny, Quebec) and Quinn Sylow (Sydney, Australia) and freshman Andrew Bole (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade Julienne) were all double-winners for Grand Valley.
Darrell, ranked 19th by the ITA in the Midwest region for singles, posted a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Stonehill junior Nick Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) at No. 2 singles after combining with Sylow for an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles. Sylow also collected a 6-3, 6-4 decision over junior Brett Armstrong (Manville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) at No. 5 singles.
Bertrand breezed to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Stonehill sophomore Eric Ringstad (Fairbanks, Alaska/Monroe Catholic) at No.1 singles after teaming up with Hodges for an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles. Hodges also claimed a 6-1, 6-1 win over freshman Philip Klados (Lake Forest, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) at No. 3.
Stonehill (8-1, 3-0 NE-10) is back in action tomorrow when it faces Ohio Dominican University at Lake Cane Tennis Center in Orlando at 12:30 p.m. The Skyhawks next home game is Thursday, March 14, when they host Eastern Nazarene College at 3:30 p.m. Grand Valley State (7-1, 3-0 GLIAC) had a second match today scheduled with Moravian College at 1 p.m.
