Martin/Klados reach B-Flight finals, all five doubles teams earn wins at event

EASTON, Mass. (September 10, 2012) – The Stonehill College sophomore doubles team of Jared Drzal (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) and Jonathan Sanders (Holbrook, N.Y./St. Anthony's) highlighted the Skyhawks performances at the 2012 Stonehill Doubles Invitational held at Charles Watt Tennis Courts on Saturday.

Drzal and Sanders combined to win the D-Flight finals with an 8-2 victory over Endicott College's Tyler Lemieux and Tim Ferance. The Skyhawks reached the finals by defeating College of the Holy Cross' Jeff Paadre and Scot Brownell, 9-7, in the semifinals after topping Rich Crooks and Weston Jordan from Eastern Nazarene College, 8-0 in the quarterfinal round.

Senior Chris Martin (Darien, Conn./Darien) and freshman Philip Klados (Lake Forest, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) teamed up to reach the B-Flight finals before being defeated by Rich Degregoris and Chris Brosnan from Holy Cross, 8-2. The Skyhawks team advanced to the finals with an 8-2 victory over Cam Chamberlain and Charlie Paitsios from Curry College in the semifinals after topping Springfield College's Joe Gianelli and Jesse Boyd, 8-6, in the quarterfinals.

Stonehill's top doubles team of junior Nick Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) and sophomore Eric Ringstad (Fairbanks, Alaska/Monroe Catholic) and third doubles team of junior Brett Armstrong (Manville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) and sophomore Thomas Alaimo (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) both reached the semifinals of their flight brackets.

Hyzak and Ringstad defeated Ryan Sullivan and Conner McCann from Holy Cross, 8-6, in the quarterfinals of the A-Flight Championship before being edged by eventual event champions Chris and Nick Schwab of Saint Anselm College, 9-7, in the semis. The Schwab brothers went on to post an 8-5 victory over Eastern Nazarene's Austin Stedman and Sam Jon in the championship round.

Armstrong and Alaimo opened with an 8-2 win over Eastern Nazarene's Tyler Perron and Kevin Paterno in the C-Flight quarterfinals before falling to eventual flight winners Tim Regan and Nick Berrettini from Holy Cross, 9-7, in the semifinals.

A fifth Stonehill doubles team of junior Taylor Whitcomb (Round Top, N.Y./Cairo-Durham) and freshman William Brosnan (Garden City, N.Y./Chaminade) went on to win the D-Flight consolation bracket after suffering a quarterfinal round defeat. The duo topped Eastern Nazarene's Crooks and Jordan in the consolation finals, 8-0.

Stonehill (0-0, 0-0 NE-10), ranked eighth in the ITA Division II East Regional rankings, opens its 2012-13 dual match schedule on Friday when it hosts Franklin Pierce University for a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at Watt Courts at 3 p.m.
