Martin, Hyzak Among Nine NE-10 Academic All-Conference Selections from Spring Season

EASTON, Mass. (July 10, 2012) – Stonehill College junior Paige Frost (Brigantine, N.J./Holy Spirit) headlines a list of nine Northeast-10 Conference Academic All-Conference selections from the spring sports season as she has also been named the Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence award winner for women’s tennis by the Conference.

The nine Stonehill student-athletes, four of which are first time selections, were among 96 NE-10 student-athletes recognized from the sports of baseball, softball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field. The nine selections give Stonehill 30 Academic All-Northeast-10 selections for the academic year.

Frost is the first student-athlete from the Stonehill women’s tennis program to earn Sport Excellence Award honors from the Northeast-10. She is the fourth Stonehill student-athlete this year and the ninth in school history since the award was established in 2009 to earn the award. Joining Frost as Sport Excellence Award recipients this year are seniors Maura Ferrarini (Springfield, Mass./Springfield Cathedral) and Stephen Polito (Worcester, Mass./Doherty Memorial) from the men’s and women’s cross country teams as well as ice hockey junior Dana Borges (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy). Ferrarini and Polito, who also earned Academic All-Northeast-10 honors for both cross country and indoor track and field this year, join Frost as spring Academic All-Conference honorees as part of the outdoor track & field teams.

Stonehill’s remaining Academic All-Conference honorees from the spring season are junior Caroline McBride (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) and sophomore Elizabeth LaRegina (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) for women’s outdoor track & field, junior Kevin McCann (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) for men’s outdoor track & field, junior Chris Martin (Darien, Conn./Darien) and sophomore Nick Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) from the men’s tennis team and junior Kayla Green (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) from the women’s lacrosse team.

Frost is a three-time All-Northeast-10 Conference performer for the Skyhawks, earning second team honors at No. 3 singles this past season in which she posted a 21-9 combined record in singles and doubles play. She was 9-5 in singles, including a 7-2 mark in NE-10 play, while going 12-4 at No. 1 doubles, including a 7-2 clip in NE-10 matches to collect All-NE-10 third team honors along with senior Sarah Hickey (Lee, Mass./Lee). Frost also earned NE-10 All-Championship team honors for her efforts in helping lead Stonehill to the NE-10 Championship match for the fourth-straight year.Frost collects her first Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence award as well as Academic All-Northeast-10 honors for the second-straight year. She has earned a 3.66 cumulative grade point average while majoring in business at Stonehill. Frost has received the St. Thomas Aquinas Medal each of the last two years for having the highest GPA on the women’s tennis team, has been named to the NE-10 Commissioner’s and Athletic Director’s Honor Rolls every semester at the College and is a Division II ADA Academic Achievement Award recipient.

Frost, who earned first team All-NE-10 honors as a freshman and sophomore at No. 5 and No. 4 singles, respectively, was also an NE-10 All-Rookie team pick her freshman season. She has posted a 51-7 career singles record at Stonehill, including a 32-2 clip in Conference play, winning the B-singles championship at the 2010 ITA East Regional her sophomore season. Frost is 32-11 over her career in doubles play, posting a 16-3 mark in NE-10 matches. She spent the Fall 2011 semester abroad, studying at NUI Galway.

Martin earns Academic All-Conference honors for the first time, having achieved a 3.65 cumulative grade point average as an accounting major at Stonehill. He received the St. Thomas Aquinas Medal for the first time this spring for having the highest cumulative GPA on the men’s tennis team, has earned NE-10 Commissioner’s and Athletic Director’s Honor Roll status every semester and is a Division II ADA Academic Achievement Award recipient.

Martin is a three-time All-Northeast-10 performer at doubles, earning third team honors this spring with senior partner Aaron Bergeron (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) after combining to post an 8-8 record, including a 5-2 clip in NE-10 matches. Martin also registered a 9-7 singles clip, playing mainly at No. 2, going 4-2 NE-10 mark. He was also the B-singles runner-up at the Stonehill Invitational during the fall season.

Martin, who earned All-NE-10 third team honors at No. 5 singles and All-Rookie team accolades as a freshman, was a third team All-Conference performer with Bergeron at No. 2 doubles his sophomore season and No. 3 doubles as a freshman. Martin has posted a 69-43 combined record over his career at Stonehill, going 37-20 in doubles play to go with a 32-23 singles clip.

Hyzak is also an Academic All-Conference selection for the first time having earned a 3.32 cumulative GPA while majoring in economics at Stonehill. He has earned NE-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll status each semester and has been named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll one semester.

Hyzak, an NE-10 All-Rookie team selection as a freshman, earned second team All-Northeast-10 honors at No. 2 doubles along with freshman partner Eric Ringstad (Fairbanks, Alaska/Monroe Catholic). Hyzak was a combined 29-19 this past season, competing at both No. 2 singles and doubles. He was 16-8 in doubles play, including an 8-3 mark in NE-10 matches, while posting a 13-11 singles record, including 6-4 in the NE-10. Hyzak is 32-15 over his two seasons in singles play, including a 16-5 clip in NE-10 matches, while posting a 28-18 career doubles record, 16-6 in the NE-10.

Ferrarini wraps up her career at Stonehill with eight NE-10 All-Academic awards and her fourth career honor in track and field. Ferrarini, the Sport Excellence Award recipient in cross country this fall, recently graduated with a 3.73 cumulative grade point average as a chemistry major at the College. Ferrarini, who received the St. Thomas Aquinas Medal for having the highest GPA on the track & field team, was also selected to the Capital One Academic All-District I team for the second-straight year and has been named to the NE-10 Commissioner’s and Athletic Director’s Honor Rolls each semester.

Ferrarini combined to set a new meet record at the NE-10 Outdoor Track & Field Championships this spring in the 4x800-meter relay with Emily Anderson (Manchester, Conn./Manchester), Erin Rielly (Burlington, Mass./Burlington) and LaRegina as the relay squad finished first overall in 9:24.99. Stonehill broke its own record in the event as the Skyhawks previous best was 9:40.42 set during the 2009 NE-10 Outdoor Championships.

Ferrarini also placed ninth overall in the 1500-meter run at the outdoor conference championships in 4:52.22. Ferrarini ranked 18th overall in the 1500-meter run at the Brown Springtime Invitational (4:52.31) and finished 25th overall at the New England Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a time of 4:53.12.

McBride earns her second career Academic All-Conference selection, both in track and field, after compiling a 3.57 cumulative grade point average as an American History major with a minor in journalism at Stonehill. McBride built off of her success during the indoor season by capturing first place honors in the 10,000-meter run at the NE-10 Outdoor Championships for the second-straight season with a meet record time of 38:29.88.

A U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-East Region selection in the 5000-meter and 10,000-meter runs this season, McBride earned All-New England honors at the 2012 New England Championships placing second overall in a school record time of 37:31.77. McBride shattered her previous school record of 37:40.01 which she set at the Skyhawk Invitational on April 14 earlier in the season. McBride has been named a USTFCCCA All-East Region selection six times in her career collecting four honors in the 5000-meter run and two for 10,000-meters.

McBride also earned Capital One Academic All-District I honors this spring and has collected multiple NE-10 Commissioner’s and Athletic Director’s Honor Roll selections.

LaRegina, who has earned a 3.80 cumulative GPA as a psychology major at the College, rounds out the women’s track and field selections with her second career Academic All-Conference honor. LaRegina joined Anderson, Ferrarini and Rielly on the first place and meet record 4x800-meter relay team at the NE-10 Outdoor Championships and also placed fourth overall in the 800-meter run with a personal best time of 2:15.48.

Earlier in the season, LaRegina finished fifth overall in the 1500-meter run at the Holy Cross Crusades in 4:49.52 and 13th in the 800-meter run at the Brown Springtime Invitational in 2:17.45. LaRegina also earned All-NE-10 honors in the 4x800-meter relay during the NE-10 Indoor Championships this winter as the Skyhawks took first place and has been a consistent member of both the NE-10 Commissioner’s and Athletic Director’s Honor Rolls.

Polito, who earned Capital One Academic All-America honors this spring, collects his third NE-10 Academic All-Conference selection for outdoor track & field, giving him nine Academic All-Conference honors (including cross country and indoor track & field) over his career. He has received the Northeast-10 Sport Excellence Award for cross country as a junior and senior and recently graduated with a 3.73 cumulative grade point average while majoring in graphic design at Stonehill.

Polito was named the Edward E. Martin Male Scholar-Athlete Award winner at the College's senior awards banquet and received the St. Thomas Aquinas Medals for both cross country and track & field for having the highest grade point average for both programs. Polito has collected Academic All-Conference honors in cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field all three years he has been eligible, while also receiving NE-10 Commissioner's and Athletic Director's Honor Roll status every semester at the College and received Division II Athletic Directors' Association Academic Achievement Awards each of the last two years.

Polito, a two-time NE-10 10,000-meter run champion as a freshman and sophomore, has earned All-Region honors each of the last two years for that event as well as the 5000-meter run. He earned All-New England honors in the 10,000-meter run for the third time in his career this spring with his second-straight second place finish on May 11 in a school-record time of 30:50.48. Polito collected All-Northeast-10 honors in the 5000-meter run with a second place finish in 15:01.46 the week before. He holds the W.B. Mason Stadium record with his victory in the 10,000-meter run at this spring's Skyhawk Invitational (31:28.53).

In addition to winning the NE-10 Cross Country Championships last fall, Polito as part of second place team finishes at the NCAA Division II East Regionals for cross country, a pair of second place showings at the NE-10 Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Championships as well as a program-best third place showing at the New England Outdoor Track & Field Championships during his senior season.

McCann earns Academic All-Conference honors for the first time, having achieved a 3.50 cumulative grade point average while majoring in international business at Stonehill. He completed a semester abroad in China in Fall 2011 and has collected NE-10 Commissioner’s and Athletic Director’s Honor Roll status multiple semesters.

McCann is a two-time All-East Region honoree by the USTFCCCA in the outdoor pole vault, and a three-time All-Region performer overall. He cleared a season-best 14-feet, 3.25-inches in a ninth place finish at the season-opening UConn Huskies Invitational on March 31, a height he later matched in a third place showing at the Skyhawk Invitational. McCann placed third at the NE-10 Championships (13-11.25) and was 17th at the New England Championships.

McCann earned his first indoor All-East Region award with a season-best 14-feet, 0.5-inches in a fifth place finish at the URI Charley Torpey Memorial Invitational. He turned in a third place showing at the NE-10 Indoor Championships (13-7.25). McCann cleared a then program record 14-3.25 to pick up All-East Region honors for the pole vault during the 2011 outdoor season. He later matched that height with a tenth place finish at the New England Outdoor Championships.

Green also earns her first Academic All-Conference selection, having achieved a 3.66 cumulative grade point average while majoring in communication at Stonehill. She has earned the St. Thomas Aquinas Medal for having the highest GPA on the women’s lacrosse team each of the last two years and has been named to the NE-10 Commissioner’s and Athletic Director’s Honor Rolls every semester at the College, while also receiving the Division II ADA Academic Achievement Award.

Green is coming off a breakout season for the Skyhawks this spring in which she collected IWLCA All-North Region honors for the first time with her second team selection after also earning second team All-Northeast-10 honors for the first time. She started all 19 games for Stonehill and led the team with 56 goals (4th NE-10/16th nationally) to go with 18 assists (17th) for a team-high 74 points (7th/27th). Green will enter her senior season with 152 career points in 55 games on 115 goals and 36 assists. Her 18 assists during her breakout season this spring doubled her totaled from her first two collegiate seasons.

To be eligible for selection to the academic teams, a student-athlete must have met and/or exceeded the following minimum requirements: 1) participated in at least half of the team’s competitions and be either a starter or significant contributor; 2) achieved a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale); and 3) completed at least one academic year at his/her current institution. The Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference teams are chosen by a vote of a selection pool that includes administrators, Senior Woman Administrator council, Sports Information Directors and the Faculty Athletic Representative council.
