Stonehill Tops Salve Regina in Spring Opener, 8-1

Ringstad and Hyzak guide Skyhawks to non-conference win

EASTON, Mass. (March 3, 2012) – Stonehill College, ranked tenth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional rankings, opened its spring schedule with an 8-1 triumph over Salve Regina University in non-conference men's tennis action at Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex tonight.

Freshman Eric Ringstad (Fairbanks, Alaska/Monroe Catholic) and sophomore Nick Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) led the double-winners for Stonehill as the duo opened with an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles. Ringstad went on to post a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles over Salve Regina senior Zachary Rosenfeld (Easton, Conn./Joel Barlow), while Hyzak topped senior Brian Castrichini (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3.

Senior Aaron Bergeron (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) and freshman Jared Drzal (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) also picked up a pair of wins for Stonehill. Bergeron swept to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles after combining with junior Chris Martin (Darien, Conn./Darien) for an 8-5 decision at No. 1 doubles. Drzal and classmate Jonathan Sanders (Holbrook, N.Y./St. Anthony's) cruised to an 8-0 victory at third doubles and then picked up an 8-0 win at sixth singles.

Junior Aaron Isch (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) picked up the lone point for Salve Regina with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) triumph over Martin at No. 2 singles.

Stonehill (5-0, 3-0 NE-10) returns to action next Sunday, March 11, when it opens its spring break schedule against Wayne State (Mich.) University in Orlando, Fla., at 6 p.m. The Skyhawks return home on Wednesday, March 21, to host Post University for a dual match at 4 p.m. Salve Regina (0-7, 0-0 CCC) hosts Wheaton College on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
