Stonehill Picks Up Key Region Win Over NYIT, 7-2


Senior Tim Fayed rallied from 6-1 down in the third set super tiebreak to win his single match that went to tiebreakers in each of the first two sets. 

Skyhawks sweep doubles to key second win in as many days

EASTON, Mass. (March 27, 2011) – Stonehill College, ranked ninth in the most recent ITA East Regional rankings, picked up a key regional win with a 7-2 decision over New York Institute of Technology, who was competing in its first dual match after reinstating the program after a 19-year hiatus, in a non-conference men's tennis matchup at Charles Watt Tennis Courts today.

Senior Tim Fayed (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury), ranked 13th in the ITA East Regional rankings, led the double-winners for Stonehill as he gutted out a 7-6 (7-2), 6-7 (5-7), 10-7 victory over NYIT sophomore Filip Van Eylen (Oud-Heverlee, Belgium) at No. 1 singles, rallying from 6-1 down in the super tiebreak third set to win. Fayed also combined with sophomore Chris Martin (Darien, Conn./Darien) for an 8-1 win at first doubles as the Skyhawks swept all three doubles matches to send them on the way to victory.

Junior Aaron Bergeron (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) and freshmen Nick Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) and Brett Armstrong (Manville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) were also double-winners for Stonehill. Bergeron cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win at fourth singles after teaming up with Hyzak for an 8-1 win at second doubles. Hyzak also coasted to a 6-1, 6-1 win at fifth singles, while Armstrong won at sixth singles, 6-0, 6-1 to go with his doubles win at No. 3.

Freshmen Julian Marcon (Nandrin, Belgium) and Vojislav Pecikoza (Belgrade, Serbia) earned NYIT's two points. Marcon won 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 at second singles, while Pecikoza win at third singles, 6-4, 6-4.

Stonehill (7-4, 2-1 NE-10) returns to action on Friday when it hosts Le Moyne College for a Northeast-10 Conference dual match at 3 p.m. NYIT (0-1, 0-0 ECC) hosts Post University tomorrow at 4 p.m.
