Stonehill Competes at USTA/ITA East Regional


Junior Aaron Bergeron will compete in both the singles and double brackets in the B-flight on Sunday.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (September 18, 2010) – The Stonehill College men's tennis team had a strong day one at the 2010 USTA/ITA East Regional, hosted by Chestnut Hill College and Philadelphia University, today.

Senior Tim Fayed (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) posted a 7-5, 6-4 win over Chestnut Hill's Mario Gutierrez in the opening round of the A-flight singles bracket and will open day two with a matchup with fifth-seeded Felix Missal from Concordia College tomorrow.

Fayed and freshman Nicholas Hyzak (Caldwell, N.J./Guilford) were eliminated in the opening round of the A-flight doubles championship with an 8-4 decision to third-seeded Attila Toth and Dave Berstein from Queens (N.Y.) College, a doubles tandem that cruised 8-0 in the next round to close the day in the semifinals.

Stonehill has four individuals and one doubles pairing still alive in the B-draw entering day two of the regional. In singles, junior Aaron Bergeron (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) opened with an 8-4 win over Jim Shelp of Le Moyne College. He will face Merrimack College's Tim McHugh in the round of 32 tomorrow. Hyzak topped Alamin Ripor from Post University, 8-5 in his opening round match and will next face Karlon Bernard from the University of District of Columbia in the round of 32 tomorrow. Sophomore Chris Martin (Darien, Conn./Darien) breezed to an 8-1 win over Cory LaFort from Southern New Hampshire University in his first match and will battle Chestnut Hill's Pat Joson in the next round. Junior Jonathan Burke (Wakefield, R.I./South Kingstown) received a first round bye and will open tomorrow with a match against Le Moyne's Andy Gleason.

Bergeron and Martin have reached the quarterfinal round of the B-flight doubles bracket and will face Gleason and Joe Persia from Le Moyne for a spot in the semifinals. Bergeron/Martin opened with a 9-7 triumph over Liam Hoare and Chris Barnhart from Merrimack, before blanking Chestnut Hill's Stephan Wolfert and Mike Pecoraro in the second round.

Burke and freshman Conor Fallon (Old Lyme, Conn./Lyme-Old Lyme) were defeated by McHugh and Jon Ravenelle from Merrimack, 9-7, in their opening round match.

Action winds down tomorrow on day two of the USTA/ITA Division II East Regional. Stonehill (1-0, 0-0 NE-10) hosts Franklin Pierce University for its Northeast-10 Conference opener on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
