Skyhawks Suffer Heartbreaker in NCAA Opening Round
Easton, Mass. - The No. 4 seeded Stonehill College Men's Tennis team (18-7, 9-1 Northeast-10 Conference) dropped their opening round match up with No. 5 seeded Queens College (12-6, 4-1 East Coast Conference) on Thursday, 5-3. The Skyhawks, who earned the program's highest NCAA Tournament seed, finish with 18 wins, a new record in the College's 56-year history.
Freshman Tim Fayed (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) led the Skyhawks with two wins at No.1 doubles and No.2 singles. Fayed teamed with partner Michael Mashkevich (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) for an early 8-4 win over Marcelo Kim and Taylor Crabill. No. 3 doubles partners Mike Leone (Cataumet, Mass./Bourne) and John McGaffigan (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) claimed Stonehill's second win, 8-5. The Skyhawks held a 2-1 advantage at the conclusion of doubles competition after a loss at No. 2 doubles.
Fayed rolled from there, winning 6-2, 6-1 over Queens' Marcelo Kim. The Skyhawks led 3-1 in the best to five series. Queens, however, would claim four straight matches for the 5-3 win.
With the win Queens College advances to take on Concordia College in the second round of the NCAA DII Championship Tournament. Concordia advanced earlier in the day defeating Philadelphia University, 5-0. The match is scheduled for tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at Stonehill College.
