WALTHAM, Mass.-- The Stonehill men’s tennis team saw its season come to an end on Wednesday afternoon, as the fifth-seeded Chieftains dropped a 5-2 decision to fourth-seeded Bentley in quarterfinal round play of the 2005 Northeast-10 Conference Men’s Tennis Championships on the Bentley Courts.

The host Falcons (11-9) advance to Saturday’s semi-final round to meet top-seeded Assumption on the Stonehill Courts in Easton, Mass. at 1:00 p.m. Saturday’s second semi-final match will feature second-seed Franklin Pierce taking on third-seed Bryant.

Sophomores Greg Maloomian (Needham, Mass.) and Greg Avola (Newton, Mass.) were winners in both singles and doubles play for Bentley in the first-to-five points post-season format, while sophomore Michael McCrillis (Kennebunkport, Maine) posted a straight set win at the number four singles spot. Senior Colin Whooten (Norton, Mass.) and freshman Pat Schorno (Fishkill, N.Y.) teamed up for the Falcons’ other point of the day with an 8-6 triumph at number three doubles.

Freshman John McGaffigan (Dedham, Mass.) was a winner in both singles and doubles play in the setback for the visiting Chieftains (7-5), as he posted a three-set win over Whooten at number three singles and teamed with senior Kevin Charland (North Scituate, R.I.) for an 8-5 triumph at number two doubles.
