Assumption Edges Men’s Soccer, 1-0, in NE10 Opener

Hammersley tallies save saves

EASTON, Massachusetts (September 21, 2019) – The Stonehill College men's soccer team was defeated by Assumption College, 1-0, Saturday afternoon in the Skyhawks Northeast-10 Conference opener on Skyhawk Field.

Stonehill (2-3, 0-1 NE10) saw freshman Andrew Hammersley tally seven saves in the loss as Assumption (3-1, 2-0 NE10) outshot the Skyhawks 12-5.

With a lot of back-and-forth play, Stonehill saw its best effort late in the first half by senior Ryan Chieffo who sent the ball just over the crossbar from just outside the 18-yard box at 30:29.

Following that play, the Skyhawks were called for a foul just inside the box on the left side and the Greyhounds' Kevin Fernandez tallied the first goal of the game off the penalty kick for a 1-0 advantage at 31:18. Hammersley stayed just as busy in the second half as he was in the first half, as he saw six shots in each half with four saves in the first and three in the second.

The Skyhawks will travel to Manchester, New Hampshire for a mid-week NE10 contest as they face Saint Anselm College on Wednesday, September 25 with a kickoff at 4:00 p.m.
