Men’s Soccer Posts 2-1 Victory in Home Opener Against Bentley

Pereira records first-career goal in first win of the season

Nutt scored his second tally of the season and ninth of his career

EASTON, Massachusetts (September 11, 2019) – The Stonehill College men's soccer team earned its first win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Bentley University on Skyhawk Field Wednesday afternoon.

Stonehill (1-2) saw senior Keegan Nutt tally his second goal of the season and ninth of his career, as classmate Daniel Pereira put in his first-career goal. Freshman Andrew Hammersley recorded five saves in his first-collegiate win. Bentley (0-1) saw Connor Mote with his first goal of the season off a penalty kick.

After the opening kickoff, the game was heavily in Bentley's favor as Stonehill felt out the Falcon's plan for attack. Stonehill saw two shots on goal in the first 25 minutes of the game, including one from sophomore Luke Fuller from about 25 yards out that sailed into the keeper's hands at 21:59. Two minutes later, the Falcons saw Connor Mote go one-on-one with a defender inside the box, but Hammersley was ready for action as he stopped his second shot on goal. At the end of the first half, Bentley outshot Stonehill 14-2.

In the 51st minute of the game, a foul was called on Bentley about 20 yards out and Stonehill surrounded the set piece with three Skyhawks. Ryan Chieffo and Michael McShane crossed the ball, and Nutt, who touched it last, sent it past the wall to the back left post for a 1-0 lead at 50:43. Seven minutes later, Stonehill was called for a foul inside the box and Adam Watkins sent the penalty kick over the crossbar in the 59th minute of the game, missing a chance to tie the game at one, 1-1.

Later in the second half, Bentley committed another foul just outside the 18-yard box, and Nutt once again set up a cross to the back post for Pereira that was headed by a Falcon, before the senior put the ball in the net for his first career goal at 66:55, 2-0. Mote got another chance for the Falcons to score, as a foul was called on the Skyhawks inside the 18-yard box once again. Mote was able to put the shot away to cut the deficit to one, 2-1 at 77:33. Stonehill was able to hold on for the win as the Skyhawks outshot the Falcons 4-1 in the remaining minutes.

The Skyhawks host non-conference foe Concordia (N.Y.) College on Saturday, September 14 for its second home game out of its three-game series on Skyhawk Field with a start time of 4:00 p.m.
