LAFAYETTE HILL, Pennsylvania (September 5, 2019) – The Stonehill College men's soccer team opened up their 2019 schedule with a non-conference battle against Chestnut Hill College, where the Griffins came from behind for a 3-1 victory over the Skyhawks.
For the Skyhawks, (0-1) senior Mackenzie Hoglund registered the first goal of the season, while classmate Ryan Chieffo assisted in the play. Freshman Andrew Hammersley recorded 10 saves in his first-collegiate start.
Chestnut Hill (1-0) saw Pedro Dutra, Paris Bruhn, and Andrew Johnstone find the back of the net, while Bruhn notched the lone assist for the Griffins on Johnstone's goal. In net, Frank Maniscalco stopped seven shots in the game.
In the sixth minute of the game, Hoglund ripped the first shot on goal as the Skyhawks took control of a loose ball in their defensive third. He was led down the left channel where he eyed the back right post, but the Griffins' goalkeeper tipped the shot. A few minutes later, Stonehill found themselves back in their attacking third as Chieffo took back-to-back shots from the right side of the net into the diving goalkeeper, before Hoglund slid the ball in for a rebound goal at 10:37 in the first half, 1-0.
A few minutes into the second half, Stonehill committed a foul on the baseline in the six-yard box, calling for a penalty kick for the Griffins. Dutra sent the ball to the back left post past the diving Hammersley to tie the game at one, 1-1, at 51:18. On a restart in the 58th minute, Bruhn booted the ball through the Skyhawks wall at the top of the 18-yard box for their first lead of the game, 2-1.
Roughly four minutes later, Johnstone headed the ball home after Bruhn lifted the ball from the right side line on a free kick about 30 yards away for a two-goal advantage, 3-1. The Griffins handled the second half with ease as they totaled 15 shots out of their 24 in the game, while Stonehill only saw three in the second half out of their 11 during the game.
The Skyhawks look to bounce back against Holy Family University on Saturday, September 7 at Tiger Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for another non-conference battle with a start time of noon.
