Assumption Fights Back for 2-1 Win Over Men’s Soccer

Chieffo scores his third goal of the season

Mesiti tallies his first assist of the season

WORCESTER, Massachusetts (October 23, 2018) – The Stonehill College men's soccer team scored first, but Assumption College was able to put two on the board in a minute and seven seconds to come back from behind for a 2-1 Northeast-10 Conference victory on Tuesday night the Greyhounds' Multi-Sport Stadium.

For the Skyhawks, (6-9-1, 5-8-1 NE10) Ryan Chieffo tallied his third goal of the season, fourth career as Matthew Mesiti registered his first assist of the season and second-career helper. Junior goalkeeper Billy Troast recorded eight saves in the loss.

Stonehill looked to take command right out of the kickoff, as they saw back-to-back shots from Mesiti and Kevin O'Shea, as both shots were saved by the Greyhounds' Sebastian Jimenez. Assumption had their own opportunity as Jason Lages saw his own back-to-back shots in the third minute of the game. After a foul on the Greyhounds, Stonehill took possession again and Mesiti launched two shots and was able to dish the ball to Chieffo in the ninth minute who put the ball in the back of the net for his third goal of the season at 8:33, 1-0. Both teams were highly active in the first half, as the Skyhawks outshot the Greyhounds, 14-10 and Stonehill saw three corner kicks to Assumption's one.

In the early minutes of the second half, the Greyhounds registered four shots, including two on goal and one header by Lages. Troast was able to fend off Assumption's early activity, but in the 61st minute Connor Willis tallied his fifth goal of the season inside the six-yard box from a chip from Juan O'Neill at 60:13, tying the game at one, 1-1. A minute and seven seconds later, Assumption capitalized on a foul and yellow card on Stonehill after a free kick from Alex Moschella, as Tyler Moreau netted his first of season to put the Greyhounds up 2-1 at 62:30.

About three minutes later, Stonehill's Luke Fuller tried to get the Skyhawks back in the game with a shot on goal at 65:46. Assumption also dug in and tried to put another tally on the board with six shots in the remaining minutes, three on goal. The Greyhounds outshot the Skyhawks 13-4 in the second half for a total of 23 shots for Assumption and 18 for Stonehill.

The Skyhawks will host Franklin Pierce University (7-9, 6-6 NE10) for Stonehill's regular season finale on Friday, October 26 at 3:00 p.m. on Skyhawk Field. Prior to the match, Stonehill will recognize its six seniors.
