Men’s Soccer Edges Out Assumption in 3-2 Overtime Victory

EASTON, Mass. (October 24, 2017) – The Stonehill College men's soccer team played in its third-straight overtime game this season and defeated Assumption College, 3-2 with one second remaining in overtime on Tuesday afternoon on Skyhawk Field.

For Stonehill (6-9-2, 3-8-1 NE10), Adam Branco (Naugatuck, Connecticut/Naugatuck) and Michael McShane (Needham, Massachusetts/Needham) tallied the early goals, while Eric Dominguez (Oceanside, California/Carlsbad) recorded the golden goal in overtime for his first-career goal. Mackenzie Hoglund (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) assisted Branco's ninth goal, while Justin Brehm (Latham, New York/Shaker) helped in McShane's third of the season. Freshman goalkeeper Jeremy Zielinski (Sunnyvale, California/Homestead) recorded seven saves in his first-career victory in net.

Assumption (5-10-1, 3-8-1 NE10) saw Simon Trcka put two goals on the board, with one being unassisted and the other from Andres Amador. Goalkeeper Brian Murray tallied 12 saves in the loss.

Neither team was able to get a tally on board, but Stonehill outshot Assumption 14-6 in the first half. The Greyhounds came out with eagerness, as Kevin Hernandez tallied the first shot on goal for Assumption. Zielinski dove for the ball and punched it for Assumption's first corner kick. The Greyhounds put another corner kick on board but were unsuccessful, as the Skyhawks' booted the ball out of their defensive third.

With a very back and forth first frame, Stonehill was able to string together a series of one corner kick and seven shots in four minutes of play but were defended by Assumption's backline blocking three and saving one.

The Skyhawks got on board 12 minutes into the second half with Branco's ninth goal of the season. Stonehill drew a foul on Assumption and Hoglund took the free kick from the left side of the field, as Branco was able to head the ball to the ground finding the back left post for a 1-0 advantage in the 58th minute of the game.

The Greyhounds were able to score the equalizer three minutes later, in the 61st minute of the game, with a free kick themselves from Trcka that landed short in front of the keeper and bounced over his outstretched hands tying up the game at one, 1-1.

After an offside call on Stonehill at the 67th minute, the Skyhawks fought back and regained possession quickly, as Brehm dribbled the ball into the box and chipped it off to McShane in the 68th minute of the game for a 2-1 lead.

With 12 minutes left in regulation, Assumption was able to slide in another goal with a breakaway from Amador and a strike from Trcka to tie up the game once more, 2-2. Before the horn, Stonehill launched back-to-back shots on goal from Stephen Vercollone (Pembroke, Massachusetts/Pembroke) and Hoglund, to send the Skyhawks into its' third-straight overtime match and fifth of the season.

With many 50/50 balls and shots from far away, Stonehill and Assumption each tallied three shots in overtime. The Skyhawks quickly reset after a ball kicked out of bounds by the Greyhounds and Dominguez launched the ball from about 30 yards out. The shot hit the underneath part of the crossbar and curved over the line with one second remaining in overtime for a 3-2 victory.

Stonehill travels to Rindge, New Hampshire for a 7:00 p.m. matchup against Franklin Pierce University on Friday, October 27 on Sodexo Field for their final away regular season contest of the year.
