Two Second Half Goals Send Merrimack Over Men’s Soccer, 2-0

Goalkeeper Conor McDonough tallies a career-high nine saves

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (October 19, 2016) –The Stonehill College men's soccer team fell late in the second half to Merrimack College, 2-0, Wednesday night at Martone-Mejail Field.

Stonehill's (6-8-0, 4-6-0 NE-10) junior goalkeeper Conor McDonough (Bridgewater, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) registered a career-high nine saves in the loss.

Merrimack's (11-3-0, 8-2-0 NE-10) Aasmund Joedahl and Juan Meza were the goal scorers of the night. Sebastian Toro, Lars Sund, and Ryan Wine assisted the tallies.

Merrimack came out of the gates with a strong start as the Warriors out shot the Skyhawks 13-1. Both teams saw multiple opportunities, as they both put pressure on each other's defense. With three seconds left in the first half, Stonehill took advantage of a long ball as Adam Branco (Naugatuck, Conn./Naugatuck) took it to the net, but was called back for being offsides after maneuvering the ball past the Warrior netminder.

The second half opened up and both teams were only able to get one shot on goal before the Warriors capitalized in the 56th minute. Toro sent a cross to Joedahl who tapped the ball past McDonough for a 1-0 advantage. Stonehill had three corner kicks to Merrimack's two before the Warriors connected for a last minute goal. With 43 seconds left in the game, Merrimack's Wine and Sund passed the ball in to find Meza at the top of the box for a one-timer, putting the Warriors up 2-0.

Stonehill competes in its final away contest of the regular season as it travels to the University of New Haven on Saturday for a 7 p.m. Northeast-10 matchup before finishing up the season at home.
