Men’s Soccer Edges American International, 2-1

Mesiti tallies first-career game winning goal

EASTON, Mass. (October 11, 2016) – The Stonehill College men's soccer team earned its first win at home in a 2-1 victory over Northeast-10 foe American International College Tuesday night at W.B. Mason.

Stonehill's (5-7-0, 3-5-0 NE-10) Matthew Mesiti (Albany, N.Y./Guilderland Central) tallied his second goal of the season, while Justin Brehm (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) recorded his first goal of the season. Freshman Mackenzie Hoglund (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) registered his first-career assist.

American International's (5-7-0, 3-5-0 NE-10) Steven Hernandez tallied the lone goal, as Alejandro Alvarez tallied the helper in the loss.

The Yellow Jackets took control of the first 16 minutes as they totaled two shots before the Skyhawks' Connor O'Brien (Schenectady, N.Y./Guilderland Central) was able to find an opening at the top of the 18 just scuffing wide right. In the 17th minute, American International's Alvarez sent a through ball from the left flank, to Hernandez who connected on a low shot from inside the 16 putting the Yellow Jackets on top, 1-0.

With no corner kicks in the first half, both teams relied on their boots as American International outshot Stonehill by one, 7-6 at the end of the first half.

Right out of the halftime huddle, Stonehill was able to answer as Hoglund launched a corner kick in the 50th minute to the top of the sixth. Brehm reacted and headed the ball to the far right post, knotting the game, 1-1. The Skyhawks were able to regain collaboration in the second half as Stonehill outshot American International 6-4.

After a Yellow Jacket shot on goal in the 67th minute, Conor McDonough (Bridgewater, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) easily scooped the ball and dished it out to his defenders giving Stonehill the advantage in their offensive third. In the 70th minute of the game, Mesiti connected on an opportunity, as he sent the ball over the goalkeeper to the left post, giving Stonehill the upper hand, 2-1. As neither team was going to go down without a fight, the Yellow Jackets were only able to get off two shots before the final horn.

Stonehill hosts Le Moyne College on Saturday, October 15 at 11 a.m. at Skyhawk Field. Prior to the game, former head coach Hernani "Ernie" Branco will be remembered with a memorial dedication at 10 a.m.
