Sophomore Doherty tallies lone goal for the Skyhawks

Garden City, N.Y. (October 8, 2016) – The Stonehill men's soccer team fell to No. 14 Adelphi University Saturday night at Motamed Field, 6-1, in Northeast-10 Conference play.

Adelphi's (8-1-1, 6-0-1 NE-10) James Thristino, Federico De Oliveira, Joseph Sanchez, and Christian Lird each tallied one goal, while Caelan Hueber recorded two in the victory.

The Panthers (8-1-1/6-0-1 NE-10) jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage as James Thristino found the top left corner after a pass and a header from Toni Soler and Hueber in the seventh minute of the game. The Skyhawks responded with a goal of its own as O'Brien found Doherty, who struck the ball in between the goalkeeper and the post, knotting the game at 1 in the 15^th minute.

After nine minutes of scoreless action, Adelphi took a one-goal advantage, 2-1, as Soler assisted De Oliveira's header into the net in the 24^th minute of the game. Four minutes later, Hueber rebounded a prior shot from Thristino, who pushed the margin to 3-1, in favor of the Panthers, after finding the back of the net. With just around 15 minutes remaining in the half, Adelphi persisted once more as Sanchez booted the ball from the right side of the box past goalkeeper Conor McDonough (Bridgewater, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy), for a 4-1 advantage.

In the 58^th minute of the game, Hueber headed the ball, which was saved by McDonough, but Hueber reacted quick enough to tip in his second goal of the game, 5-1. Adelphi recorded its fifth-straight goal of the game as Lird launched a free kick to the top left corner of the net at the 79^th minute of the game. 

Stonehill returns home for its Purple and White Game at W.B. Mason Stadium as it hosts American International College on Tueday, October 11 at 7 p.m.
