Doherty Scores Last Minute Goal in 2-1 Victory Over Saint Rose

Doherty scored his first-career game winner

O'Brien tallied his first helper of the season

ALBANY, N.Y. (September 13, 2016) – The Stonehill men's soccer team defeated The College of Saint Rose, 2-1, in its first Northeast-10 contest of the season Tuesday night at Sullivan Field.

Stonehill (3-1, 1-0 NE-10) junior James O'Shea (Quincy, Mass./Quincy) tallied his fourth goal of his career, while Patrick Doherty (West Milford, N.J./Saint Joseph Regional) registered his first-career goal. Classmates Adam Branco (Naugatuck, Conn./Naugatuck) and Connor O'Brien (Schenectady, N.Y./Guilderland Central) each recorded their first assist on the season.

Saint Rose (2-2, 0-1 NE-10) Ryan Rooney picked up his fifth goal of the season, while Suleiman Haruna-iya tallied the helper.

The Golden Knights acted within the first minute of the game as Haruna-iya recorded the first shot of the game as the Skyhawks' Conor McDonough (Bridgewater, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) registered the first save, but only before Rooney found the back of the net off the rebound putting Saint Rose on top early, 1-0.

Branco picked up his first assist of the 2016 season

Stonehill reacted to Saint Rose's goal with its own tally as Branco crossed the ball from the right finding O'Shea for a one-timer, knotting the game, 1-1, at the 29th minute. The Skyhawks continued to pester the Golden Eagles' Christian Esposito in net as Stonehill outshot Saint Rose 10-4 in the first half.

Both teams put up a good fight, but the second half was once again Skyhawk dominant as an 11-3 shot advantage led to the game winner for Stonehill. With 43 seconds left in regulation, Stonehill was able to capitalize on a last minute pass from O'Brien that would end up being headed on the run into the right bottom corner of the cage by Doherty, closing out the game, 2-1.

McDonough held down the defense five saves, while Esposito tallied nine saves in the loss.

Stonehill continues NE-10 conference play as it takes on Franklin Pierce University at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 17 for its home opener.
