Stonehill rally falls short after forcing extra session on the road

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (October 27, 2015) – The Stonehill College men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to the Southern Connecticut State University Owls in Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) action on Saturday afternoon at Jess Dow Field.

Sophomore forward Louis Greenway Tambini (Nottingham, England) provided the game-winner for the Owls in the 96th minute on a feed from junior midfielder Christian Samaniego (Toronto, Ontario). After Samaniego played a ball through the Skyhawks defense, Greenway-Tambini corralled the ball, sprinted down the left flank and struck a shot into the lower left corner of the net for his second goal of the game.

Greenway-Tambini opened the scoring in the 11th minute, taking a pass from sophomore forward Chae Brangman (St. George's, Bermuda) and slotting it past Stonehill senior goalkeeper Luke Besse (Hamilton, Massachusetts/Hamilton-Wenham Regional) for his conference leading ninth goal of the season.

Stonehill would fight back and tie up the game in the 53rd minute when Senior Drew Montano (Avon, Connecticut/Avon) deflected in a cross from sophomore Adam Branco (Naugatuck, Connecticut/Naugatuck) to give the senior his seventh goal of the season.

Stonehill would maintain its pressure, desperately trying to find the game winner. The Skyhawks had an opportunity to take the lead in the 55th minute, when Montano sent in a corner kick that found Matthew Gallo (Mendham, New Jersey/West Morris Mendham) who shot the ball into a crowded box. Branco deflected the shot and it just went past the near post. The Skyhawks had another opportunity in the 73rd minute off of another Montano corner kick. The senior whipped the ball into the box, finding senior defender Evan Devanny (Concord, New Hampshire/Concord) who headed the ball over the crossbar.

Besse stopped eight shots in net for the Skyhawks while Southern Connecticut State's sophomore goalkeeper Noah Varonier (Miller Place, New York) turned aside one shot.

Stonehill (6-8-2, 3-7-2 NE-10) will be back in action on Friday afternoon, as the Skyhawks are set to wrap up their regular season slate on the road against Saint Anselm College at 2 p.m. Southern Connecticut State (9-5-1, 8-3-1 NE-10) will close out its regular season at home on Friday afternoon against the Penmen of Southern New Hampshire University.
