Men's Soccer Drops 4-1 Contest at Le Moyne

Freshman Matthew Mesiti scored his first collegiate goal today at Le Moyne

Skyhawks cut deficit to one early in second half, unable to rally further

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (October 17, 2015) – The Stonehill College men's soccer team dug itself into an early hole before falling by a 4-1 margin at Le Moyne College today in Northeast-10 (NE-10) competition at Le Moyne's Ted Grant Field.

Le Moyne junior defender Ryan Matthews (Dublin, Ireland/Dublin Institute of Technology) scored in the 26th minute on a feed from redshirt-senior midfielder Cal Filtch (Marcellus, New York/Marcellus) to stake the Dolphins to an early advantage. The home team would double its lead in the 27th minute, when freshman defender Patrick Doherty (West Milford, New Jersey/Saint Joseph Regional) was called for a foul in the box which awarded Le Moyne with a penalty. Filtch stepped up to the spot and buried his sixth goal of the season to give the host a 2-0 lead.

Stonehill got back into the contest just five minutes into the second half on freshman midfielder Matthew Mesiti's (Albany, New York/Guilderland Central) first career marker, to cut the Le Moyne advantage to one. Senior defender Evan Devanny (Concord, New Hampshire/Concord) launched a free kick from inside the Skyhawk half. The ball sailed into the right side of Dolphins box where Mesiti let the ball bounce once, then connected with it and watched it float over the keepers head into the far left post.

Le Moyne responded in the 63rd minute when Filtch calmly sank his second penalty shot of the day to push the lead to 3-1. The Dolphins put the game out of reach in the 74th minute, scoring their fourth and final goal of the game.

Le Moyne sophomore goalkeeper Ben Beaury (Cohoes, New York/LaSalle Institute) stopped two shots for the Dolphins, while his counterpart, Stonehill senior Luke Besse (Hamilton, Massachusetts/Hamilton-Wenham Regional), made three saves.

Stonehill (5-6-2, 2-5-2 NE-10) will look to bounce back on Wednesday afternoon, when the Skyhawks return home to host Merrimack College at 3:30 p.m. Le Moyne (9-4, 5-4 NE-10) is also back in action on Wednesday against Assumption at Ted Grant Field.
