Men's Soccer Uses Big First Half to Beat Saint Michael’s, 3-0

Senior Drew Montano led Stonehill to a 3-0 win over Saint Michael's with a goal and an assist.

Skyhawks score three goals in the span of 15 minutes to top the Purple Knights

EASTON, Mass. (October 3, 2015) – Stonehill College scored three times in under fifteen minutes in the first half en route to a 3-0 victory over Saint Michael's College this afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference men's soccer action at Skyhawk Field.

Senior forward Drew Montano (Avon, Connecticut/Avon), who has led the Skyhawks in points for the past three years, tallied three more with a goal and an assist to fuel the Skyhawks past the Purple Knights Saturday afternoon.

Montano opened the scoring for Stonehill, receiving a through ball from classmate Craig Moreau (Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) and slipping it past the Purple Knights senior goalkeeper Nicco Roque (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) to make the score 1-0.

Senior Evan Devanny (Concord, N.H./Concord) doubled up the Skyhawk lead just seven minutes later, taking a corner kick from Montano that went over Roque's head and heading it past a wall of defenders into the net.

Sophomore Adam Branco (Naugatuck, Connecticut/Naugatuck) put the finishing touches on Stonehill's three-goal spurt in the 32nd minute, when he took a cross from classmate Matthew Gallo (Mendham, New Jersey/West Morris Mendham), skied over a Purple Knight defender and snapped a header into the lower right corner of the net.  

Senior goalkeeper Luke Besse (Hamilton, Massachusetts/Hamilton-Wenham Regional) made four saves and earned his second shutout of the season. Besse has now gone 210 minutes without conceding a goal, registering back-to-back shutouts.

Roque, made three saves on the day and gave up three goals after previously shutting out three of Saint Michael's last four opponents.

Stonehill (5-4-1, 2-3-1 NE-10) will look to continue its two-match point streak next Saturday, when the Skyhawks host Adelphi University at 11 a.m. Saint Michael's (5-4, 3-3 NE-10) is back in action on Wednesday, when the Purple Knights will try to keep their perfect home record intact against Le Moyne College.
