Men's Soccer Rides Big First Half to 3-2 Win at Roberts Wesleyan

Senior forward Craig Moreau scored his first goal of the season in Stonehill's 3-2 win at Roberts Wesleyan today.

Skyhawks score three goals for second straight match and third time this season

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (September 12, 2015) – The Stonehill College men's soccer team scored three times during the first 18 minutes of action en route to a 3-2 non-conference victory at Roberts Wesleyan College this afternoon.

Seniors Drew Montano (Avon, Connecticut/Avon) and R.J. Aprile (Carmel, New York/Kennedy Catholic) each found the back of the net for the second consecutive day, while classmate Craig Moreau (Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) recorded his first goal of the season.

Moreau got the Skyhawks on the board just 3:05 into the contest with an unassisted strike from the corner of the box, and ten minutes later Montano netted his team-leading third goal of 2015 to give Stonehill a 2-0 lead. Aprile capped the offensive surge at the 18:00 mark, when he headed a cross from sophomore back Matthew Gallo (Mendham, New Jersey/West Morris Mendham) into the left corner of the net from eight yards out.

Roberts Wesleyan would cut into its deficit before the half, however, as junior midfielder Malcolm Shaw (Pickering, Ontario) beat Stonehill sophomore goalkeeper Conor McDonough (Bridgewater, Massachusetts/Coyle & Cassidy) with a header in the 31st minute.

Gallo and freshman midfielder Matthew Mesiti (Albany, New York/Guilderland Central) each put shots on net in the closing minutes of the half, but Roberts Wesleyan sophomore goalkeeper John Clavaglia (Pittsford, New York) stopped both attempts to keep the Redhawks' deficit at two.

Roberts Wesleyan recorded six shots and five corner kicks in the second half, but was unable to break through for another goal until the 88th minute, when junior Will Cornfield (Corning, New York) scored his second of 2015.

Following four consecutive road matches to start the season, Stonehill (3-1, 0-0 NE-10) finally returns home on Tuesday afternoon to host the College of Saint Rose in the Northeast-10 Conference opener for both teams at Skyhawk Field. Roberts Wesleyan (1-1-1, 0-0 ECC) is back in action on Wednesday afternoon at Le Moyne College.
