Freshman Justin Brehm scores second game-winning goal in three matches
Amherst, N.Y. (September 11, 2015) – Stonehill College scored two first half goals and held off Daemen College for a 3-2 victory this afternoon in non-conference men's soccer action at Dimp Wagner Stadium.
Stonehill utilized three-different scorers in the contest, including senior midfielder R.J. Aprile (Carmel, New York/Kennedy Catholic), who got the Skyhawks on the board at the 23:03 mark with the help of sophomore midfielder Connor O'Brien (Schenectady, New York/Guilderland Central).
Freshman midfielder Kyle Tracy (Cicero, New York/Cicero-North Syracuse) equalized for the Wildcats just 50 seconds later, but Stonehill regained the lead in the 29th minute when senior forward Drew Montano (Avon, Connecticut/Avon) collected a failed Daemen clearance and fired a shot into the open net.
The Skyhawks nearly took a two-goal lead in the 40th minute when freshman midfielder Justin Brehm's (Latham, New York/Shaker) header attempt struck the crossbar, but the score remained at 2-1 heading into the break.
Brehm would convert in the 70th minute, however, finding the back of the net after the Daemen defense again failed to clear the ball out of the penalty area. The freshman's strike would prove to be the game-winner, his second in three matches this season.
Tracy brought the Wildcats back to within a goal with his second tally of the afternoon at the 77:51 mark, but the home team was unable to secure an equalizer.
Making his first collegiate start in net, sophomore goalkeeper Conor McDonough (Bridgewater, Massachusetts/Coyle & Cassidy) made seven saves, including five in the second half. On the other end, Daemen freshman Justin Figler (Grand Island, New York/Grand Island) stopped four of the seven attempts that came his way.
Stonehill (2-1, 0-0 NE-10) will remain in New York and make the one-hour trip to Rochester to take on Roberts Wesleyan College tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. Daemen (1-2, 0-0 ECC) is also in action tomorrow, as the Wildcats play host to the College of Saint Rose at 2 p.m.
