Junior forward Drew Montano registers assist, game-winning goal in 89th minute

EASTON, Mass. (October 18, 2014) – Junior forward Drew Montano (Avon, Connecticut/Avon) recorded three points, including the game-winning goal in the 89th minute, to lead Stonehill College to a 2-1 victory over visiting American International College this afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference men's soccer action at Skyhawk Field.

With just 1:06 remaining in the contest, Montano collected a loose ball in the box after sophomore back Patrick Keogh's (Garden City, New York/Garden City) shot was blocked and fired the ball into the back of the net for his fifth goal of the season.

Montano had several chances to score in the first half, including a shot that hit the crossbar at the 16:56 mark and a shot on goal 21 seconds later. The junior factored into Stonehill's goal in the 35th minute, when American International sophomore goalkeeper Sebastian Tamayo (Stratford, Connecticut/Frank S. Bunnell) got a hand on his shot attempt, but left the ball at the goal line. Junior forward R.J. Aprile (Carmel, New York/Kennedy Catholic) capitalized on the opportunity, stepping up to bury the ball into the net for his third of the season.

American International equalized just over three minutes later, as junior forward Ed Sharman (Tunbridge Wells, England/Bennett Memorial) carried the ball into the box, cut back to lose a Skyhawk defender and beat Stonehill senior goalkeeper Adam Colella (Wilmington, Massachusetts/St. John's Prep) to even the score before halftime.

Colella played the first 51:34 in net and made two saves before leaving with an injury, while junior Luke Besse (Hamilton, Massachusetts/Hamilton-Wenham Regional) took over and played the final 38:26, making a pair of saves as well. Despite giving up two goals, Tamayo made eight stops for the Yellow Jackets.

Stonehill outshot American International 17-10 in the game, including a 12-7 advantage in the first half. The Skyhawks also held a 5-4 edge in corner kick opportunities.

Stonehill (8-5-1, 6-4-0 NE-10) will be off for a week before returning to action next Saturday, October 25th at Assumption College. The Skyhawks defeated Assumption 3-0 in the Catholic Cup on September 5th in the season opener for both teams. Stonehill will then play at Saint Michael's College on October 28th, before returning home to host Le Moyne for Senior Day at Skyhawk Field on Saturday, November 1st. American International (7-7-0, 4-6-0 NE-10) will be back in action on Wednesday night, when the Yellow Jackets host the College of Saint Rose at 7 p.m.
