Stonehill Plays Roberts Wesleyan To 1-1 Draw In Home Opener

Freshman Connor O'Brien notches second career goal in 75th minute

EASTON, Mass. (September 12, 2014) – Stonehill College rallied from a second half deficit to earn a 1-1 draw with Roberts Wesleyan College this afternoon in non-conference men's soccer action at Skyhawk Field.

Junior midfielder R.J. Aprile (Carmel, New York/Kennedy Catholic) played a through ball into the 18-yard box to freshman midfielder Connor O'Brien (Guilderland, New York/Guilderland, who beat Roberts Wesleyan goalkeeper Michael Scavone (North York/Ontario/St. Basil The Great) to tie the score at 1-1 in the 75th minute. O'Brien now leads the Skyhawks with two goals in three games this season.

After a scoreless first half, the Redhawks struck first in the 53rd minute. Junior back Michael McGinnis (Elmira, New York/Elmira Free Academy) got up above several Stonehill defenders to head home a corner kick from  senior forward Michael Cunningham (Derbyshire, England/Harry Carlton School).

Roberts Wesleyan had an opportunity to win the game in the first overtime session on another corner opportunity by Cunningham. Sophomore Sam Moody (Toronto, Ontario/Melvern Collegiate Institute) headed Cunningham's corner towards an open part of the net, but Stonehill junior back Anthony Cavazza (New Windsor, New York/Cornwall) was there to head the ball out of harm's way.

Stonehill junior goalkeeper Luke Besse (Hamilton, Massachusetts/Hamilton-Wenham) stopped five of the six shots that came his way, lowering his goals against average to 0.97 this season. Scavone also made six saves for the Redhawks. Stonehill out-shot Roberts Wesleyan 16-11 in the game, but corners were even at eight.

Stonehill (1-1-1, 0-0 Northeast-10) will have an opportunity to get back into the win column tomorrow morning, as the Skyhawks are set to host Nyack College at 11 a.m. at Skyhawk Field. Roberts Wesleyan (2-0-2, 0-0 ECC) is back in action on Sunday, when the Redhawks will head to Worcester, Massachusetts to take on NE-10 foe Assumption College.
