Stonehill Plays To 1-1 Draw At American International

Skyhawks fall behind in second half, respond to earn point

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 19, 2013) – The Stonehill College men's soccer team allowed an early second half goal, but responded with one of its own in an eventual 1-1 draw with American International College today in Northeast-10 action at Ronald J. Abdow Field.

After a scoreless first half, American International opened the scoring in the 50th minute, when freshman midfielder Gregory Smedberg (Plantsville, Conn./Southington) found the back of the net following a cross field pass from sophomore midfielder Kyle Kazukynas (Enfield, Conn./Enrico Fermi) to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead.

Stonehill answered in the 62nd minute, when senior captain Tim Canniff (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) deflected a throw-in from sophomore forward Drew Montano (Avon, Conn./Avon) past American International senior goalkeeper Jason Ryan (Peabody, Mass./Peabody Veteran Memorial) to knot the score up at one.

The contest ended in a tie, as neither squad was able to score in the two overtime sessions. Stonehill junior goalkeeper Adam Colella (Wilmington, Mass./St. John's Prep) was impressive in net, making twelve saves to preserve the tie and point for Stonehill.

Stonehill (4-8-1, 3-6-1) is back in action a week from today, when the Skyhawks host Assumption College in the second to last contest of the year at Skyhawk Field. The start time is slated for 11 a.m. American International (5-6-2, 3-5-2) returns to the pitch on Tuesday night at the College of Saint Rose.
