Skyhawks score first, streaking Penmen fight back for win
EASTON, Mass. (October 2, 2013) – The Stonehill College men's soccer team took a second half lead, but visiting Southern New Hampshire University tied the contest before eventually winning it in overtime, 2-1, in Northeast-10 action today at Skyhawk Field.
Stonehill sophomore forward Drew Montano (Avon, Conn./Avon) put the Skyhawks in front, 1-0, roughly ten minutes into the second half, when he fired a blistering shot from several yards outside the penalty area into the top right corner of the net, past the dive of Southern New Hampshire goalkeeper Dom DiMaggio (Rome, N.Y./Rome Free Academy). Dimaggio, who entered today's action with a 0.47 goals-against average, had only allowed three goals this season prior to Montano's strike.
Just seven minutes later, the Penmen struck back when Northeast-10 Player of the Week Pierre Omanga (Paris, France/Lycee Georges Clemenceau/Montevallo) headed home a floating ball after Stonehill failed to clear it from the front of the net. Omanga, who was honored by the conference after scoring three times last week, upped his total to six this season with his game-tying and game-winning markers.
Southern New Hampshire, which came into today's contest on a six-match winning streak, nearly scored in the first overtime period on a shot by junior Keegan Campbell (Norton, Mass./Norton), but Stonehill junior captain Adam Colella (Wilmington, Mass./St. John's Prep) was able to get his fingertips on the ball and deflect it over the net. Colella made six saves in the overtime loss.
Four and a half minutes into the second overtime session, Omanga struck again. Southern New Hampshire sophomore back Jonathan Lupinelli (Mont de Marsan, France/Lycee Camille Julian) found Omanga streaking down the field, and sent a long cross in his direction. In stride, the senior forward headed the ball past Colella to give the Penmen their seventh win in a row.

Before the start of today's match, Stonehill presented sophomore back Joshua Bankert (Cuttingsville, Vt./Mill River Union) with the Fred C. Petti individual award for the 2012-2013 academic year. The Fred C. Petti academic awards are named as a tribute to Fred Petti's countless hours of dedication through his various roles as the vice-president for administration with direct oversight of athletics, coach and recruiting coordinator, and as a long-time faculty member at Stonehill. Each year, Stonehill honors one male and one female student-athlete with the highest combined GPA for the fall and spring semester.
Stonehill (3-5-0, 2-3-0 NE-10) will be searching for its first win since September 17th when it heads to Southern Connecticut State University for a Saturday night NE-10 match. The Skyhawks then play at Franklin Pierce University next Tuesday night, before returning to Easton on Saturday, October 12th for a contest with the University of New Haven. Southern New Hampshire (7-1-0, 5-0-0 NE-10) will look to extend its winning streak to eight when it hosts American International College Saturday at 4 p.m.
