Skyhawks muster only two shots on goal in defeat

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (September 11, 2013) – The Stonehill College men's soccer team was dealt a tough loss in its first road match of the season, falling 5-0 to East Coast Conference power Mercy College today at Mavericks Field. Mercy is currently ranked fourth in the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II East Region Poll, and receiving votes in the national poll.

Stonehill hung tough for the first 28 minutes of action, before Mercy found its offensive groove and tallied three goals before halftime. Sophomore forward Christian Diaz (Watsonville, Calif./Univ. of Vermont) led the Mavericks with two goals and an assist, while teammate Roberto Dashi (Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) added a goal and two assists of his own.

Senior captain Kevin Gilmartin (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) and junior Ben Zandonella (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) each recorded a shot on goal for the Skyhawks, but that was the extent of Stonehill's offense in the contest.

Stonehill (1-2-0,0-0-0 NE-10) will look to rebound from the tough loss Saturday at 1 p.m., when it welcomes The College of Saint Rose to Skyhawk Field in NE-10 action. Mercy (3-0-0, 0-0-0 ECC) is off until next Wednesday, when the Mavericks will face the New York Institute of Technology.
