Skyhawks explode offensively in second half with four goals

ALBANY, N.Y. (October 20, 2012) – The Stonehill College men's soccer team doubled up The College of Saint Rose, 4-2, in Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) action on Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Field.
Freshman forward Drew Montano (Avon, Conn./Avon) factored into three of Stonehill's four goals in the second stanza to lead the Skyhawks. Senior midfielder Jonathan Hope (Avon, Conn./Avon), sophomore midfielder Tyler Brondyk (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) and sophomore forward Cam McDonough (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) all scored goals in the win.
Junior midfielder Kevin Gilmartin (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) initiated two scores while freshman R.J. Aprile (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) had one assist.
In a second half that witnessed six goals total, Hope got the offensive fireworks started at the 51:48 mark as he drove home a feed from Gilmartin behind Golden Knights goalkeeper James Taber (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) for his second goal of the season.
Brondyk added to Stonehill's advantage, 2-0, with his third goal of the season in the 54th minute roofing a through ball from Montano into the top-right corner of the net.
Saint Rose junior midfielder Jacob Sand (Gothenburg, Sweden/Moveitgymnasiet) trimmed the deficit in half, 2-1, at the 62:22 mark on a header off a cross from the left flank from teammate Massimo Smiroldo (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central).
Stonehill responded with a pair of rapid goals in the 74th minute to clinch the victory.
McDonough headed home his first marker of the season after Montano and Gilmartin played two quick touches to the 6-foot, 3-inch forward near the box for a 3-1 lead at 73:24. Twenty five seconds later, Montano deposited Aprile's cross from the left flank into the back of the net for his third tally of the year.
Smiroldo added his third goal of the season at 74:17, but the Skyhawks defense held true for the remainder of the contest.
Freshman goalkeeper Luke Besse (Hamilton, Mass./Hamilton-Wenham Regional) made four saves for Stonehill while Taber turned away three shots in net for the Golden Knights.
Saint Rose held the advantage in shots, 18-12, and also recorded eight corners. Stonehill had one corner kick in each half of play.
Stonehill (3-11-1, 2-9-0 NE-10) hosts Saint Anselm College on Tuesday, October 23 at 3:30 p.m. Saint Rose (1-13-0, 1-10-0 NE-10) travels to Southern New Hampshire University on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
