Stonehill Falls To Queens (N.Y.), 3-1

Stoker scores twice to lead Knights

Sophomore Michael Thomas netted his first career goal for the Skyhawks.

EASTON, Mass. (October 10, 2012) – The Stonehill College men's soccer team was handed a 3-1 setback by Queens (N.Y.) College in non-conference action on Wednesday evening at Skyhawk Field under wet playing conditions.

Junior forward Danny Stoker (London, England/RSSKL) scored a pair of goals and sophomore forward James Dukas (Forest Hills, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) notched one marker and dished out one assist to lead the Knights offensively. Freshman midfielder Glen Reid (Falkink, UK/British School of Houston, Texas) also added one helper in the win.

Sophomore midfielder Michael Thomas (Ellington, Conn./Ellington) put Stonehill on the board first at the 51:52 mark striking a feed from Ben Zandonella (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) into the lower left corner of the net behind Knights junior goalkeeper Sean Geoghegan (Naas Kildare, Ireland, Naas CBS) for his first marker of the season.

Stoker evened the score at 1-1 less than two minutes later (53:12) by redirecting a Reid corner kick into the back of the net near the penalty circle for his fourth goal of the season.

At 59:20, Stoker pushed Queens ahead, 2-1, as he heel-kicked a slow-rolling shot underneath the dive of Skyhawks goalkeeper Ryan Rincon (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central).

Dukas fired home the insurance goal for the Knights at 77:22 burying a one-on-one chance with Rincon into the right corner of the net after winning possession of the ball from a defender near the 18-yard line.

Stonehill compiled plenty of scoring chances in the first half including a shot from junior midfielder Kevin Gilmartin (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) at 17:10 that struck the crossbar then the right post and two team saves on a shot by freshman forward Drew Montano (Avon, Conn./Avon) at 33:10 and a header from senior back Kevin Wendth (Slingerlands, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) that was turned away by a Knights defender at 33:26.

Geoghegan made eight saves (four in the first half) to improve his record to 3-2-1 overall on the season. Rincon stopped two shots in net for the Skyhawks.

Stonehill outshot Queens, 25-12, in the contest and held a 6-4 advantage in corners.

Stonehill (2-10-1, 1-8-0 NE-10) returns to action on Saturday, October 13 at home against Le Moyne College on Skyhawk Field at 11 a.m. Prior to the contest, the Skyhawks will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the men's soccer program. Queens (6-3-3, 3-1-2 ECC) hosts Roberts Wesleyan on Friday, October 12 at 3:30 p.m.
