McWilliams and White both score and dish out an assist to pace Stonehill offensively
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (October 19, 2011) – The Stonehill College men's soccer team scored two goals in the second half just three minutes and four seconds apart to take down Southern Connecticut State University, 3-2, for the first time in school history in Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) action on Wednesday night at Jess Dow Field.
The Skyhawks were 0-12-0 against the Owls prior to tonight's contest which includes last season's 2-1 NE-10 quarterfinal loss.
Half of Stonehill's senior class led the way offensively as Mark Bolster (Narragansett, R.I./Narragansett), Ross McWilliams (Kingston, R.I./South Kingstown) and Michael White (Lisbon, N.H./Lisbon Regional) all scored in the victory.
White opened up the scoring at 31:37 taking a pass from McWilliams off of a quick restart and firing it behind Owls goalkeeper Stephen Sasso (Orange, Conn./Amity) for a 1-0 advantage.
Senior midfielder Paul Templeton (Saltcoats, Scotland/St. Andrew's) evened the score at 1-1 in the 41st minute of the contest sniping a shot into the lower left corner from 18-yards out past Skyhawks goalkeeper Adam Colella (Wilmington, Mass./St. John's Prep.) for his fourth marker of the season.
Bolster responded quickly for Stonehill in the second half (47:03) finishing on a cross from teammate Kristopher Brassard (Barre, Vt./Tilton School) for a 2-1 lead and his team-leading eight goal of the year.
Three minutes and four seconds later, McWilliams gave the Skyhawks an insurance goal that proved to be the difference striking home a cross from White for his fourth tally of the season and a 3-1 gap.
Templeton cut deficit in half at 3-2 in the 85th minute for the Owls (5-7-1, 4-5-0 NE-10) blasting a loose ball from 18-yards out into the top right corner of the net but the Owls rally fell short as Southern Connecticut did not register another shot for the remainder of the match.
Colella stopped three shots on net, including two in the second half, to improve to 7-5-0 on the season. Sasso made four saves in the loss.
Stonehill held an 11-9 margin in shots and a 5-4 differential in corners.
The Skyhawks (8-7-0, 5-5-0 NE-10) host The College of Saint Rose on Senior Day on Saturday, October 22 at 11:00 a.m. at Skyhawk Field. Along with Bolster, McWilliams and White, fellow seniors Christopher Agan (Niskayuna, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy), Jordan Brown (Sheridan, Wyo./The Prout School) and Kevin Conti (Cohoes, N.Y./Shaker) will all be honored prior to the game for their contributions towards the Stonehill men's soccer program.
