Skyhawks Defeat Mavericks, 2-0, In Non-Conference Action

White tallies both goals for Stonehill in the victory

EASTON, Mass. (October 12, 2011) – The Stonehill College men's soccer team claimed a 2-0 triumph over Mercy College in non-conference action on Wednesday evening at Skyhawk Field.

Senior forward Michael White (Lisbon, N.H./Lisbon Regional) led Stonehill offensively netting both markers in the contest, all in the second half.

Freshman goalkeeper Adam Colella (Wilmington, Saint John's Prep.) preserved the win for the Skyhawks posting his third clean sheet of the season turning away three shots on net.

Mercy nearly got on the scoreboard at 23:33 on a free kick attempt by freshman midfielder Daniel Leon (Flushing, N.Y./Benjamin Cardozo). From about 25 yards out, Leon blasted a shot off the crossbar that remained in play for teammate Ernest Afful (Columbus, Ohio/North Country CC). After corralling the loose ball just outside the top left corner of the box, Afful fired a shot on net that Colella secured for his first of two saves in the period.

Tied midway through the second half, White finally opened up the scoring at 68:46 striking a low shot underneath the dive of Mavericks goalkeeper Nick Papas (Castleton, N.Y./Hudson Valley CC) into the right corner of the net for his fifth goal of the season.

Junior midfielder Anthony Campagnano (Schenectady, N.Y./Guilderland) jumpstarted the play making a sharp pass to teammate Kevin Gilmartin (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) who one-touched a through ball into the box for White and the easy finish.

White added an insurance goal at the 87:07 mark winning a ball off of a defender and sniping a shot into the right corner of the net for a 2-0 advantage and his second tally of the match.

Papas stopped two shots for Mercy in the loss.

Stonehill outshout the Mavericks, 13-12, in the contest and edged the visitors, 4-2, in corners.
