Bryn Athyn Clips Ice Hockey in Season Finale, 6-5

Seibold registers first goal of his career


Raei scored two goals for his third multi-point game this season

BRYN ATHYN, Pennsylvania (February 16, 2019) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team battled back and forth all game with Bryn Athyn College (7-17-0), until the Lions came up on top, 6-5 Saturday afternoon in the season finale at Junge Ice Hockey Rink.

For the Skyhawks (8-17-1) Kayser Raei registered two goals, as Michael Seibold, James Varney, and Seth Murray chipped in one goal each. Seibold recorded his first-career multi-point game adding an assist in the game, while Christopher Page, Cameron Wright, Jack Hall, Zachary Frament, and Shamus Maloney tallied helpers and senior goaltender Billy Palmer stopped 13 shots.

The Skyhawks was able to open up the game with a 2-0 lead in the first period. Stonehill saw three opportunities prior to the first goal as Bryn Athyn was called for three penalties, but the Skyhawks were unable to find the back of the cage. The Skyhawks' Seibold scored his first-collegiate goal at 13:44 with assist from Wright for a 1-0 lead, and Raei chipped in his fifth goal of the season at 15:03 for a two-goal lead in favor of Stonehill, 2-0. Bryn Athyn capitalized on a loose puck late in the first frame as Nikita Smirnov slapped the Lions' first goal of the game at 19:17, with helpers from Eric Higgins and Devon Becker, 2-1.

Early in the second period, Stonehill extended its lead back to two goals, 3-1 with a power play goal at 2:51 from Murray. This was his third goal of the season, and Hall's 19th assist of the season and 31st of his career. Bryn Athyn was able to fight back with two goals in 38-seconds to tie up the game at three, 3-3. Smirnov scored his second goal of the game at 7:21 in a power play situation and Tanner Schroeder later scored at 7:59 in the frame. At 8:31, Stonehill saw an initial shot by Charles Page from the right circle and then Seibold collected the rebound for a shot of his own before Raei grabbed the puck before it went far wrapping it around the goalies' pads for his second goal of the game, putting the Skyhawks up once again, 4-3. The Lions slid in one more goal to tie up the game for the second time at 17:12 for Schroeder's second of the game in a short-handed situation, 4-4.

Stonehill saw one shot by Murray in their attacking zone, before the Lions fought to get possession of the puck to bring it to their attacking third. Bryn Athyn passed the puck around the zone before Eric Higgins found the channel to give the Lions their first lead of the game at 6:13, 5-4. The game got tied for the third time at 7:26 when Stonehill's Varney took the puck one-on-one with a Bryn Athyn defender down the right side of the ice after winning a faceoff in the Lions' attacking third. Varney lost the puck against the boards behind the gage, but Maloney dumped it back to Varney who was in front of the net to jab it in for a 5-5 game. The Lions saw its second lead of the game at 18:36, when a pass from the left circle to Schroeder on the right side found the back of the net for a 6-5 lead. Stonehill called a timeout following and pulled Palmer to try to even the score once more, but the Skyhawks only saw one final shot before time expired.

Stonehill concluded the 2018-19 season with an overall record of 8-17-1 and a Northeast-10 Conference mark of 3-11-1.
