Ice Hockey Falls in One-Goal Defeat to Bryn Athyn, 5-4

BRYN ATHYN, Pennsylvania (February 15, 2019) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team was dealt a one-goal loss to Bryn Athyn College (6-17-0) Friday night in non-conference action after having a 3-1 lead.

For the Skyhawks (8-16-1) Kyle WoodruffSeth Murray, Shamus Maloney, and Kayser Raei each tallied a goal, while Jack Hall chipped in two assists and Jack Scannell registered one assist. Senior goaltender Billy Palmer tallied 30 saves in the game.

Seven minutes into the game, Bryn Athyn won a faceoff and after a few shots by the Lions, Woodruff blocked a shot that was taken down into the Skyhawks' attacking third. The goalie tried to play it back to one of his players and after an initial shot from Scannell that was saved, and Woodruff was able to put back the rebound at 7:01 for a 1-0 lead. The Lions quickly tied the game at one, 1-1, with a rebound shot of their own from Zach Pamaylaon from the right circle at 9:55 for a power play goal. Roughly two minutes later, with a five on three situation, Stonehill was able to capitalize with the man advantage as Hall sent a pass from the left circle to the top of the key for Murray to slide the dish through the goaltender's pads at 12:32, 2-1. Maloney later scored his 12th goal of the season at 17:08 for a two-goal lead, 3-1. Bryn Athyn cut the deficit to one with a minute and a half remaining in the period with Dakota Ulmer's fourth goal of the season at 18:27, 3-2.

The Skyhawks looked to clear the puck from their defensive zone, but were unable to get it past the neutral zone as the Lions stole the puck. An initial shot by Nick Malvasi was stopped by Palmer and then another Lion was able to drop off the puck to Tanner Congdon for the equalizer, 3-3, at 9:32 in the second period. Bryn Athyn took its first lead of the game with its second power play goal of the game at 14:04 with a slapshot from Alex Grollman to get ahead by one, 4-3. Stonehill was able to kill back-to-back penalties that caused the Lions to be in a two-man advantage that led into the third period.

The Lions' Ulmer dropped the puck off to Congdon right in front of the net, for a quick shot that went up and under the crossbar for a two-goal lead at 6:15 in the third period, 5-3. Stonehill was called for three penalties in the third period, while Bryn Athyn was called for four penalties. Late in the frame, the Skyhawks pulled Palmer at 16:14 when the Lions received their second penalty of the period and with an extra skater, Stonehill capitalized cutting the deficit to one, 5-4 at 16:50 as Raei chipped in his fourth goal and power play goal of the season. The Skyhawks pulled Palmer for one more time at 18:14 and saw two shots before the Lions killed the final power play for the victory.

Stonehill concludes its season tomorrow, with its final game of the year with a puck drop at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 16 in Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania at the Junge Ice Hockey Rink.
