Stonehill Skates to 3-3 OT Draw Against Saint Michael’s

Three players tally two points each


Raei nets his first goal in the Purple and White, while tallying two points in the first draw of the season

BRIGHTON, Massachusetts (January 19, 2019) – The Stonehill College ice hockey team was able to fight back against Northeast-10 Conference foe Saint Michael's College Saturday night as the Skyhawks skated to their first overtime draw of the season, 3-3, at Warrior Ice Arena.  

For Stonehill, (4-10-1, 1-6-1 NE10), Kayser Raei scored his first-collegiate goal, while Cameron Wright and Shamus Maloney also chipped in tallies. Wright, Maloney, Raei, and Seth Murray each registered assists in the tie, while freshman goaltender Chase McKay recorded 41 saves for a season high.

Both teams saw plenty of opportunities in the opening period as Stonehill held a slight edge in shots, 12-11, but both teams went 0-1 in power play opportunities. The Skyhawks were also called for a penalty at the final buzzer of the opening frame giving them a shorthanded opportunity in the second period.

The Purple Knights took advantage of their fourth power play of the game, third of the period, as Zach Sullivan put the puck back at McKay at 12:06 for a 1-0 lead with assist from Niall Foster. As play continued, Saint Michael's had three more opportunities with a man advantage, while Stonehill saw two the entire frame and the Purple Knights saw a 14-12 shot advantage.

The third period saw three unanswered goals from Stonehill, as Saint Michael's was able to respond back each time. The Skyhawks broke down the Purple Knight's defense within the first minute of the third frame as Raei slid in the puck in, as he sat in front of the cage at 1:33 and collected passes from Wright and Maloney tying the game at one, 1-1. With another man advantage later in the period, Wright collected a pass from the left side of the offensive zone and sent a one-timer from the right circle at 7:51 for Stonehill's second power play goal of the game putting the Skyhawks up 2-1.

Less than a minute later, Saint Michael's Andy Ide tied the game up, 2-2, with helpers from Matt Egan and Ethan Hendrickson at 8:25. Late in the period, the Purple Knight's Foster stole the puck from the Skyhawks who saw the advantage and gave Saint Michael's their second lead of the game, 3-2, at 17:24. Stonehill responded at 18:42 after not giving up in the final minutes, as Maloney came in clutch with a quick shot from in front of the cage to give the Skyhawks another chance to come from behind, 3-3. Both teams saw a penalty in overtime and Stonehill was outshot by Saint Michaels, 4-1, as no one was able to put one in the cage to take the victory.

Stonehill's third game against Saint Michael's College, which was originally scheduled for tomorrow, Sunday, January 20 at 2:40 p.m. at Warrior Ice Arena has been postponed. The Skyhawks take on Post University for two games this Friday, January 25 and Saturday, January 26, both with 7:30 p.m. puck drops.
