Saint Michael’s Five-Goal Surge in Third Period Tops Ice Hockey, 7-2

Wright scores his third goal of the season

Quinn scores his second goal of the season and career

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vermont (December 4, 2018) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey was tripped up by Northeast-10 Conference foe, Saint Michael's College, 7-2, in their final Conference matchup of the semester at C. Douglas Cairns Recreation Arena Tuesday night.

For Stonehill, (2-7-0, 1-4-0 NE10), Cameron Wright and Colin Quinn each registered the goals, while Jack Hall, Tim Grable and Logan Stark tallied the assists.

Stonehill had one shot, while Saint Michael's launched four shots in a two-minute span, as Sel Narby put in the first goal of the game at 6:49. Paul McAuliffe and Zach Sullivan dropped the puck off to Narby who skated around the cage from the right side and slapped the dish to the right side of the cage for an early 1-0 lead. The Purple Knights were called for the first penalty of the game, as Ethan Hendrickson was called for interference at 18:26. On its first power play, the Skyhawks saw two shots on goal, as the extra man opportunity continued 26-seconds into the second period.

As the Skyhawks kicked off the second frame with the final seconds of the power play, the Purple Knights were able to kill the penalty and not allow another shot from Stonehill. A few minutes later, Stonehill looked to clear the puck from Saint Michael's defense, as they set up a play in the Skyhawks defensive zone. Shamus Maloney brought the puck up the ice and Hall had the initial shot that went wide right of the net. Hall collected his own rebound on the left side of the cage, as a Purple Knight defender misplayed the puck and Hall found Wright for a one-timer and the equalizer at 4:55 in the second period, 1-1.

After a battle against the wall near Stonehill's bench for the puck, the Skyhawks were able to come out on top. Grable sent a high shot to the cage, and Quinn was close by to tip the flying puck with his stick into the cage at 12:54 for his second goal of the season, and the first lead of the game, 2-1. Less than two minutes later, the Purple Knights fought hard for the puck behind the cage as a pass from behind the cage to the left front circle to Nic Hermary ended up past to the back of the cage at 14:36, 2-2.

With a pass from the top of the zone, Saint Michael's continued to jab at the puck until they were able to see Matt Egan with the power play goal 56-seconds into the third period for their second lead of the game, 3-2. With five-seconds left on the power play for Stonehill, Saint Michael's reset after some tough defense by the Skyhawks and Cameron Stewart sent the puck from the right side to the upper left 90 in the cage for a two-goal advantage at 3:41, 4-2. The Purple Knights scored another goal 15 seconds later as Stewart put the puck back in the same spot at 3:56 putting Saint Michael's up 5-3. Hermary took his chance on net at 5:45 in the third frame, successfully finding the back of the cage for his second goal of the game, 6-3. Immediately after a faceoff at 11:17, Ethan Hendrickson took a one-timer at the cage for the Purple Knight's seventh goal of the game, 7-2.

Stonehill will host its final game of the semester on Saturday, December 8 against non-conference foe Wesleyan University at 5:10 p.m. at Foxboro Sports Center, before wrapping up the semester with a 7:00 p.m. non-conference battle against Worcester State University on Tuesday, December 11 at Fidelity Bank Worcester Ice Center.
