Assumption Edges Ice Hockey, 4-3, in Overtime

Jewett scored his first goal of the season, 39 seconds into the game

WORCESTER, Massachusetts (November 6, 2018) – The Stonehill College ice hockey team was edged by Northeast-10 Conference foe Assumption College, 4-3, in its first overtime game of the season Tuesday night.

For Stonehill, (0-2-0, 0-1-0 NE10) Connor Jewett , Shamus Maloney, and Ryan Meade registered the goals, while Sean Conley, Michael Seibold, and Thomas Mahoney tallied the assists. The Skyhawks' senior goaltender Billy Palmer notched 26 saves in the first overtime battle of the season.  

Stonehill was first to get on board with a tally from Jewett for his first goal of the season, 10th of his career. Conley and Seibold chipped in helpers 39-seconds into the game, putting the Skyhawks up 1-0. Eight seconds later, at 47-seconds into the game, Assumption responded with an equalizer from Dante Maribito for his first goal of the season with a pass from John McDonagh. The Greyhounds won the next four faceoffs and after a shot on goal by Jewett, Assumption skated the puck down to their offensive third and after a shot missed by Michael Zampanti, Devan Sheth was able to put the dish in the back of the cage at 4:59 for a 2-1 advantage.

Stonehill responded less than two minutes later, as Maloney recorded his first goal of the season and 10th-career tally at 6:15, for the Skyhawks' first power play goal of the season tying the score once again, 2-2. After multiple face-offs, Assumption was able to put the go-ahead goal on the board at 8:04 in the first period, as John Fine-Lease registered his first goal of the season with help from Elliott McGuire. The Greyhounds held the shot advantage at the end of the first period, 12-5, but the Skyhawks bounced back with their own 12-5 shot advantage to even out the offensive attack, 17-17.

Early in the third period, Meade slapped in his second goal of the season, fourth of his career to tie the game at three, 3-3, at 3:43. Conley tallied his second assist of the game and seventh of his career, while Maloney totaled his eighth helper of the year. At the end of regulation, Assumption held the shot advantage by one, 28-27, and Stonehill was 1-for-5 in power plays.

In their first overtime period of the season, Stonehill saw three shots to Assumptions' two, while the Greyhounds were still in a power play entering the period. Stonehill killed their fifth penalty of the game, but three minutes later Assumption's Christopher Stalmok slid in his second goal of the season for the Greyhounds' second overtime victory and fifth-straight win this season.

Stonehill will take on NE10 Conference foe Southern New Hampshire University next for a 7:00 p.m. matchup on Tuesday, November 13 in Hooksett, New Hampshire
