Ice Hockey Falls in Home Opener to Plymouth State, 5-3

Maloney tallies his fifth-career multi-point game, registering two assists


Frament scores his first goal of the season and third goal of his career

FOXBORO, Massachusetts (November 3, 2018) – The Stonehill College ice hockey team dropped its home opener to non-conference Plymouth State University (3-0-0), 5-3, Saturday night at Foxboro Sports Center.

For Stonehill, (0-1-0) Zachary Frament, Ryan Meadeand Jack Hall tallied the goals, while senior goaltender Billy Palmer registered 4 saves. Shamus Maloneychipped in two assists, while Connor Jewett picked up his own.

Plymouth State saw the first penalty of the night with a slashing call at 3:39 in the first period, but the Panthers killed the power play holding the Skyhawks to three shots as Plymouth State was able to see one of its own. Stonehill was called for the next two penalties, including one at 14:25 that gave Plymouth State an opportunity to put the first score on the board less than a minute into the power play. Matt Volonnino slid one past at 15:32 for his second goal of the season with helpers from Michael Covach and Ryan Stevens after Volonnino's initial shot that went wide of the pipes, 1-0. The Skyhawks were completely outshot at the end of the first period, 21-6.

The second period saw Plymouth State's third and fourth power plays of the game, the first less than a minute into the frame and the second at 8:47 in the period. Just before the second of the period, the Panthers' Covach slapped his own tally into the cage with assists from Mike McPherson and Volonnino for a 2-0 lead at 7:55. The Panthers capitalized on the later power play with their second power-play goal of the game, as Victory Bergstrom found the back of the cage for his third of the season with passes from Tim Perron and Volonnino. Less than a minute later, Stonehill was able to take advantage of a line change, as Maloney dished the puck to Frament who was alone in their attaching zone, to cut the deficit to two, 3-1, at 11:01. The Panthers responded to the Skyhawks' goal with another of their own just over a minute after Framents'. Ben Chipman saw help from Quinn Carroll and Ludvig Steenberg at 12:10, after an initial shot from Steenberg that went bounced off Palmer's pads to get its lead back to three, 4-1.


Hall scored his first goal of the season and his 14th goal of his career

Early in the third period, Stonehill and Plymouth State saw a major and a minor penalty, respectively, as the Skyhawks were able to kill six minutes of power play, as Stonehill was called for its seventh penalty of the game at 5:49, to expand its play with four skaters. The Skyhawks then saw two golden opportunities as Meade and Hall's goals came within less than a minute of each other to cut the deficit to one, 4-3. Stonehill was called for a late penalty with less than a minute remaining of play, and pulled Palmer to get the extra skater, until the Panthers' were back in their attacking zone and Ryan Stevens easily skated in an empty net goal at 19:55 for a 5-3 victory.

Stonehill will return to play on Tuesday, November 6 as it travels to Worcester, Massachusetts for a 7:35 p.m. game to battle Northeast-10 Conference foe Assumption College, followed by another away contest against Southern New Hampshire University on Tuesday, November 13 at 7:00 p.m.
