Second Period Surge Sends Saint Anselm Over Ice Hockey, 3-1

Schofield tallies third goal of the season

Meade tallied his third assist of the season and eighth of his career

Manchester, N.H. (January 31, 2018) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team was unable to fend off Saint Anselm College's second period surge, as the Hawks won 3-1 with three unanswered goals in Northeast-10 Conference play, Tuesday night at Sullivan Arena.

Stonehill (5-13-2, 3-6-1 NE10) saw freshman Nick Schofield (Foxboro, Massachusetts/Williston Northampton) tally his third goal of the season, as sophomore Ryan Meade (Tewksbury, Massachusetts/Tilton School) notched his third assist of the season and eighth of his career and senior Connor Tedesco (Winchester, Massachusetts/Winchester) recorded his sixth helper of the season and 20th of his career. Junior goaltender Billy Palmer (Cranston, Rhode Island/Boston Bandits – EHL Premier) recorded 30 saves, for his eighth game this season with 30-plus saves.

Saint Anselm College (9-8-1, 6-3-0 NE10) saw Mike Ferraro record two goals in a minute, as Jon Pallotta notched the third goal for the Hawks. Kevin Curley also picked up a two-point game with two assists, as Alec Andreucci, Liam O'Sullivan and Jake Grade tallied the other assists. The Hawks' goaltender, Colin Soucy registered his second win of the season recording 24 saves in the victory.

Stonehill opened the game with sixth shots on goal in six minutes compared to Saint Anselm's three shots in the first minutes. The Skyhawks slapped back-to-back shots from Meade and Tedesco that were blocked by the Hawks, but Schofield was able to collect the rebound for his third goal of the season at 5:49, 1-0. Stonehill drew the first power play at 10:19 in the first frame, but the Skyhawks were only able get off three shots as the Hawks' defense killed the penalty. Stonehill was sent to the box 14 seconds after the power play ended, and the Skyhawks kept their defense tight as well as the Hawks' only struck three shots on goal during the two minutes.

Ferraro sent one to the slot at 11:35 in the second period, tying up the game for the Hawks with help from Andreucci and Curley, 1-1. About a minute later, Ferraro was able to slide one under Palmer at 12:56, as the Hawks picked up their first lead of the game with a power play goal with Stonehill's first penalty of the period, 2-1. Saint Anselm continued controlling the puck in their offensive third with a 7-1 shot advantage, including a tally by Pallotta that was shot at the net right after a faceoff at 15:33 for a two-goal lead, 3-1. Saint Anselm drew one more penalty in the second frame, but Stonehill protected the net and left the Hawks 1-for-3 in power plays.

Saint Anselm outshot the Stonehill in the third period, 10-9, following their 14-7 shot advantage in the second, but neither team was able to connect leaving the third period scoreless.
