PAWTUCKET, R.I. (January 6, 2018) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team fell to Johnson and Wales University late in the third period, 3-4, to open up the second half of the season at Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, Rhode Island in non-conference play.
For Stonehill, (4-8-1, 2-2-1 NE10) Connor Tedesco (Winchester, Massachusetts/Proctor Academy) notched his second multi-point game of his career scoring a goal and an assist, while Nick Schofield (Foxboro, Massachusetts/Williston Northampton) and Sean Conley (Cheektowaga, New York/Buffalo Jr. Sabres - TIEHL) tallied the other goals. James Varney (Smithfield, Maine/Walpole Express – EHL Premier), Logan Stark (Newton, Massachusetts/Walpole Express - EHL), Connor Jewett (Berlin, New Hampshire/NH Junior Monarchs – EHL Premier), Kyle Woodruff (Brunswick, Maine/South Shore Kings - USPHL), and Nicholas Godin (New London, New Hampshire/Tabor Academy) recorded the other helpers for the Skyhawks. Junior Goaltender Billy Palmer (Cranston, Rhode Island/Boston Bandits – EHL Premier) registered 31 saves in the loss.
Johnson and Wales (5-10-0, 3-7-0 CCC) saw Jason Recchia tally two goals, including the game winner, and an assist for a three-point game. Chad Guderian and Ryan Sete both notched a goal and an assist in the victory, as goaltender Mike Rockwell posted 35 saves in the cage.
The two teams battled back and forth in the first period for solid possession time, as the Skyhawks' held a three-shot edge, 10-7, at the end of the frame. Ten minutes into the first period, Stonehill saw its first power play with a penalty on Johnson and Wales, but the Skyhawks were only able to get off one shot. The Wildcats' special teams kept the Skyhawks from getting anywhere close to the cage until about six minutes later. Varney and Jewett strung together some passes to get Conley free, who was able to lift the puck over the shoulder of Rockwell, giving Stonehill a 1-0 edge at 16:07. Stonehill continued pressing Johnson and Wales' defense and at 17:29 the Skyhawks capitalized on a tip-in by Tedesco for a 2-0 advantage with help from Woodruff and Stark.

The Wildcats managed to control most of the second period with a 17-9 shot advantage, including capitalizing on its second power play of the game at 3:25 in the frame. Guderian cut the deficit to one, 2-1, with assists from Sete and Recchia. Later, Recchia responded with the equalizer at 14:32, 2-2, after Nicholas Pezza won the faceoff and got a shot off prior to the tally.
Johnson and Wales was called for a penalty at 2:16 in the third, but the Wildcats were able to kill the power play and skate away with the game still tied at two, 2-2. At 8:52, Schofield was able to give the Skyhawks the go-ahead goal, 3-2, with help from Tedesco and Godin after back-to-back shots from Tedesco causing a scuffle in front of the cage. Sete then responded with his second point of the game knotting up the game for the Wildcats, 3-3, for the second time at 12:38 in the frame. The Skyhawks held a 6-4 shot advantage after the equalizer, but the Wildcats' Recchia chipped in his second tally of the game with a minute remaining in the game. Guderian fed him the puck for his second point of the game and the Skyhawks wrapped up the game by pulling Palmer for the remaining time, but the Wildcats' held on for the win dumping the puck into their offensive zone a few times before time expired.
Stonehill hosts NE10 Conference foe Saint Anselm College for the first two games of the three-game series on Friday, January 12 at the Warrior Ice Arena in Boston, Massachusetts with a 5:40 p.m. puck drop followed by a 8:30 p.m. start time on Saturday, January 13.
