Jewett registers third-career multi-point game

FOXBORO, Mass. (December 12, 2017) – The Stonehill College ice hockey team was unable to hold on as Worcester State University scored two power play goals and an empty net tally in a 5-2 victory Tuesday night at the Foxboro Sports Center to wrap up the 2017 year before heading to winter break.

Stonehill (4-7-1) saw sophomore Connor Jewett (Berlin, New Hampshire/NH Junior Monarchs – EHL Premier) record his third-straight multi-point game with the Skyhawks only two goals of the game. Thomas Mahoney (Suffern, New York/The Taft School), Kyle Woodruff (Brunswick, Maine/South Shore Kings – USPHL), and James Varney (Smithfield, Maine/Walpole Express-EHL Premier) registered the assists during the game, as Billy Palmer (Cranston, Rhode Island/Boston Bandits – EHL Premier) notched 24 saves in the loss.

Worcester State (10-1-0) saw five different goal scorers, including Jake Karelas, Brendan Boyle, Andrew Etheridge, Andy DeAngelis, and Erik Pritchard. Michell Purdie notched three assists, while Mike Moran recorded two and Pritchard, Etheridge, and Cody Weaver added in one helper each. Goaltender Josh Reinstein totaled 21 saves in the victory.  

Only 20 seconds into the first period, Stonehill was called for a tripping penalty putting them in a short-handed situation early on. Karelas jumped on the advantage at 1:03, scoring his first goal of the season with assists from Purdie and Moran. With a much of the action in the Lancer's offensive zone, Stonehill did not have much opportunity to take the puck out of the neutral zone until Jewett slid the dish past Reinstein at 15:52 for the equalizer, 1-1.

Once again, Worcester State's man advantage put the Lancers on top, 2-1, with a tally from DeAngelis at 5:38 in the second period, because of a tripping call on the Skyhawks. After back-to-back shots from Stonehill, Worcester took back possession and Boyle drove the puck to the back of the net for a two-goal lead, 3-1, at 16:16 in the second frame.

The Lancers out-scored the Skyhawks in the third period, as well, with Pritchard putting up a tally at 15:53 and Etheridge banking an empty net goal at 18:20. Jewett was able to get his second of the game at 17:32 with help from Woodruff and Varney, cutting the deficit to two, 4-2, before Worcester State concluded the game, 5-2, with s shot advantage of 29-23.

The Skyhawks head to winter break and will return to action on Saturday, January 6, as Stonehill travels to Pawtucket, Rhode Island to face non-conference foe Johnson & Wales University with a 7:05 p.m. puck drop at the Lynch Arena/Blackstone Valley Sports Center.
