Scannell leads Skyhawks offense with two goals

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (December 9, 2017) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team was unable to get past non-conference foe Wesleyan University, 2-4, Saturday afternoon at Spurrier-Snyder Rink.

Stonehill (4-6-1) saw sophomore Jack Scannell (Medfield. Massachusetts/Proctor Academy) record both goals, as classmate Ryan Meade (Tewksbury, Massachusetts/Tilton School) and junior Connor Collier (Madison, New Jersey/New Jersey Hitmen – USPHL) assisted in the second goal. Sophomore goaltender Matthew Schoen (Tolland, Connecticut/Phillips Academy) notched a career-high 43 saves in his second-collegiate start.

Wesleyan's (3-1-3) Walker Harris recorded two goals, while Tyler Wyatt and Marty Rubin registered the other two tallies. Chad Malinowski picked up two assists, as Spencer Fox, Drew Pitcher, Tyler Kobryn, and Jordan Rose notched one helper each. Goaltender George Blinick stopped 20 shots during the victory.

The Cardinals jumped on board with two goals about seven minutes apart. The first tally came from Wyatt, who found the back of the cage with 12 seconds remaining in the first power play of the game at 5:48 in the first period. After returning to even strength, Malinowski sent a shot wide of the crease, as Harris extended the lead to two with a goal at 12:23.

Stonehill would not go down without a fight in the first frame as Scannell tipped in the puck at 17:30, cutting the deficit to one, 2-1, as Wesleyan held a 18-5 shot advantage at the end of the period, including ripping three shots back-to-back before the buzzer.

Both teams sent one to the penalty box in the second period and both teams killed each respectable penalty, but the Cardinals were able to pick up another goal at 16:05, for a two-goal lead, 3-1. Rubin slapped a shot 15 seconds after Harris tried his hand on net, but Pitcher collected a lose puck and found Rubin at the top of the zone.

Scannell picked up his second goal of the game about three minutes into the third period, cutting the deficit to one, 3-2. The sophomore also recorded his first multi-point game of his career. Wesleyan wasn't done, as Harris also knocked in his second goal of the game at 11:01 in the third frame with helpers from Kobryn and Rose.

Stonehill was unable to get any more shots in, as Wesleyan combined for 47 shots to the Skyhawks 22 during the game.

Stonehill hosts non-conference rival Worcester State University on Tuesday night at Foxboro Sports Center with a puck drop at 7:00 p.m. for its final game before heading to winter break.
