Ice Hockey Soars Past Southern New Hampshire, 8-0, on Senior Night

Jacques, Hall and Newton tally three points apiece

Palmer recorded his first career shutout

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (February 11, 2017) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team soared to an 8-0 shutout against Northeast-10 Conference foe Southern New Hampshire University Saturday night at the Foxboro Sports Center.  

Prior to the victory, Stonehill honored its three seniors including Evan Jacques (Norton, Mass./South Shore Kings-EJHL), Brian Higgins (Milton, Mass./Proctor Academy), and Dylan Podbielski (Northford, Conn./North Bradford).

Stonehill finishes the 2016-17 regular season 9-13-4 overall and 6-4-1 in NE10 play. Jacques  tallied three points (1G, 2A), Tommy Newton (Hollis, N.H./Portland Jr. Pirates-USPHL Premier) mimicked Jacques, while Jack Hall (Shelburne, Vt./Proctor Academy) recorded three points with two goals and one assist. Connor Collier (Madison, N.J./New Jersey Hitmen-USPHL) registered one goal and one assist, as Conor Cassidy (Wilmington, Del./Canterbury and Kents HIll) picked up two assists and Connor Jewett (Berlin, N.H./NH Junior Monarchs-EHL Premier) found the back of the net twice. Christopher Page (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop) crashed the cage once, while Ryan Meade (Tewksbury, Mass./Tilton School), Cameron Wright (West Dummerston, Vt./Springfield Pics-USPHL Premier), Connor Tedesco (Winchester, Mass./Proctor Academy), and Zachary Frament (Concord, N.H./Tilton School) each tallied one helper in the shutout. This was the first shutout for the Skyhawks since 2015, when Stonehill defeated SUNY Canton, 5-0 on January 18. This was also the first shutout for sophomore goaltender Billy Palmer (Cranston, R.I./Boston Bandits-EHL Premier).

Southern New Hampshire University falls to 13-14-0 overall and 4-7-0 in NE10 play. The Penmen utilized all three goaltenders in the loss, combining for 30 saves.

Stonehill's 15-8 shot advantage in the first period was a testament to their four goals scored in the frame. The Skyhawks acted quickly, scoring three goals in the first six minutes. Jewett opened up the scoring with a goal at 1:24, while Hall followed at 3:12 and Page at 6:09. Jewett found the back of the net one again in the first period with an unassisted goal at 10:09. Both teams were able to kill their penalties in the frame.

The Skyhawks were persistent in the second period as Hall connected for his second of the game and seventh of the season as he crashed the net after Stonehill won the faceoff at 1:08. The Penmen were called for boarding at 2:47, causing the Skyhawks to have a man advantage, where their special teams were able to dish the puck to Jacques at 4:06 for his 14th goal of the season and fourth power play tally of the season. Three minutes before the period was over, Collier recorded his fourth goal of the season at 17:23, as the Skyhawks continued pressing.

Stonehill held an 11-8 shot advantage in the third period, as Newton was able to squeeze in one more goal for the Skyhawks at 4:42 in the period. Stonehill capitalized on one of three power plays, while Southern New Hampshire was zero for three.

Stonehill will face the No. 2 seeded Saint Michael's College in a NE10 semifinal on Saturday, February 18.
