Scannell picked up his third helper of the season

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (February 7, 2017) – Two first period goals by the Stonehill College men's ice hockey team were not enough as UMass Dartmouth skated to a 3-2 victory Tuesday night at Hetland Arena in New Bedford, Massachusetts.

Page recorded his seventh assist of the season

The loss for the Skyhawks puts them at 8-13-4 overall, even though the team outshot the Corsairs 43-41. Ryan Smith (Arlington, Mass./Tilton School) and Evan Jacques (Norton, Mass./South Shore Kings-EJHL) tallied their third and 13th goals, respectively, as Christopher Page (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop) and Jack Scannell (Medfield, Mass./Proctor Academy) picked up their seventh and third assists, respectively.

UMass Dartmouth improved to 13-8-0 on the season, as Mike Sones, Jonathan Ruiz and Mike Kelly each scored to give the Corsairs a come-from-behind victory.

Stonehill wasted no time getting on the board, as Jacques gave the Skyhawks a 1-0 lead only 29 seconds into the first period with Page assisting the senior in the goal. The Corsairs had two close opportunities as two of its 16 first-period shots hit off the pipe. The Skyhawks stringed together six-straight shots, but the Corsairs' Tommy Bay saved them all.

The Skyhawks were able to extend its lead to two, 2-0, at 16:30 in the first period as Scannell found Smith open for a one-timer. Before the end of the frame, Stonehill found itself in the penalty box, giving UMass Dartmouth a man advantage. The Corsairs capitalized on the opportunity as Sones sent the dish to the back of the cage at 19:28.

At the start of the second period, UMass Dartmouth mimicked Stonehill's first goal, as the Corsairs' Ruiz acted early and scored an unassisted short-handed goal at 36 seconds into the frame, tying up the game at two, 2-2. Kelly crashed the cage at 9:51 in the second frame giving UMass Dartmouth its first lead of the game, 3-2, and eventual game-winning goal.

Even with Stonehill's 14-9 shot advantage in the third period, the Skyhawks and Corsairs were unable to score giving UMass Dartmouth both wins this season against them.

Stonehill concludes the regular season with a NE10 game against Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday, February 11 with a 6:10pm puck drop. The Skyhawks will recognize its three seniors prior to the contest.
