Ice Hockey Battles to 1-1 Overtime Draw with Assumption

Cassidy tallies his 11th goal of his career

WORCESTER, Mass. (February 4, 2017) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team scored first against Northeast-10 Conference foe Assumption College in their third game of the series, as neither team was able to connect in a 1-1 overtime draw on Saturday night at Buffone Arena in Worcester, Massachusetts.

With the draw, the Skyhawks and the Greyhound wrap of the three-game series with a 1-1-1 record.

Stonehill is now 8-12-4 overall with a 5-4-1 NE10 mark, as freshman Conor Cassidy (Wilmington, Delaware) recorded his 11th goal of the season. Sophomore Billy Palmer (Cranston, Rhode Island/Boston Bandits-EHL Premier) tallied 40 saves on the night.

Assumption is now 8-14-2 overall and 4-5-1 in NE10 play, as Cam Laughlin scored in a power play opportunity with Dante Tomassini and Matt Cowles recording the helpers.  Nick Commesso registered 54 saves in the game.

Stonehill was able to hold a 22-14 shot advantage in the first period, which included Cassidy's unassisted goal that gave the Skyhawks a 1-0 edge in the first period at 10:33.

The Greyhounds fought back in the second period, as the Skyhawks only held a 13-12 shot advantage. Stonehill picked up back-to-back penalties, but were only able to fend off Assumption in one of them as the Greyhounds' Laughlin found the back of the net less than a minute later at 16:27 to knot up the game, 1-1.

The third period was quiet, as neither team was able to connect on any plays, but Stonehill was able to continuing pressuring Assumption with its 18-14 shot advantage in the frame.

Stonehill found itself in its fourth overtime game of the season, as Palmer shielded the Greyhounds from crashing the cage ending the game in a 1-1 draw.

Stonehill competes in its final non-conference game of the season as it travels to New Bedford, Massachusetts to face UMass Dartmouth in Hetland Arena on Tuesday, February 7 with a 7:30 p.m. puck drop.
