Men’s Hockey Stumbles Against Nichols in Boston Landing Collegiate Invitational, 5-2

BOSTON, Mass. (January 6, 2017) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team fell to non-conference foe Nichols College, 5-2, Friday night at the Warrior Ice Arena in opening play in the inaugural Boston Landing Collegiate Invitational.

For Stonehill, (3-9-2) Conor Cassidy (Wilmington, Del./Canterbury and Kents Hill) and Evan Jacques (Norton, Mass./South Shore Kings-EJHL) picked up the scores for the Skyhawks. Michael Seibold (Reading, Mass./Williston Northampton) was the only Skyhawk to pick up an assist in the loss. Sophomore Billy Palmer (Cranston, R.I./Boston Bandits-EHL Premier) turned away 33 shots.

Nichols (9-3-2) saw T.J. Roche total four points on the night (1 G, 3 A), as T.J. Roche and Scott Cuthrell picked up three points with 2 G, 1 A and 3 assists, respectively. Ryan Hunter recorded two goals, while Ian Spencer and Matthew Menta registered one assists apiece. Colin Brennan saved 21 shots on the night.

Cassidy opened up scoring just 1:01 into the game as Seibold dished the puck off to his classmate for his fourth goal of the season. Roche tied up the game as he cut in from the point receiving a one-timer from Cuthrell at 9:11. Less than six minutes later, Baker found Roche open again as he found the back of the cage to take a one-goal lead, 2-1, heading into the second period.

The Bison's Hunter opened up the second frame with a goal 1:30 into the period as Nichols had an extra attacker on the ice off of a delayed penalty, extending its lead to two, 3-1. Baker found the back of the cage less than 30 seconds after a Stonehill penalty, as the Bison held a man advantage once again to bring its lead to three, 4-1. Nichols did not call it quits until Hunter once again crashed the crease off an assist from Cuthrell at 11:04 in the second period.

The third frame remained scoreless until Stonehill's Jacques capitalized on an unassisted goal at 17:21 in the period cutting the deficit to three, 5-2, to conclude the game.

Stonehill plays against Becker College on Saturday afternoon at 4:40 p.m. at Warrior Ice Arena.
