Ice Hockey Scores Two Goals in the Third Period to Skate to 3-3 Draw Against Suffolk

Jacques scored his sixth goal in eight games

Higgins tallies his first goal of the season

CHARLESTOWN, Mass. (November 22, 2016) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team skated to a 3-3 draw against non-conference Suffolk University, after scoring two third period tallies, Tuesday night at O'Neil Rink.

Stonehill (3-3-2) saw Brian Higgins (Milton, Mass./Proctor Academy) and Ryan Smith (Arlington, Mass./Tilton School) tally their first goals of the season, as Evan Jacques (Norton, Mass./South Shore Kings - EJHL) picked up his sixth. Cameron Wright (West Dummerston, Vt./Springfield Pics – USPHL Premier) and Jacques assisted Higgins' goal, as Jack Scannell (Medfield, Mass./Proctor Academy) helped Smith's goal and Wright and Nicholas Godin (New London, N.H./Tabor Academy) passed the puck to Jacques for the game tying goal. Goaltender Billy Palmer (Cranston, R.I./Boston Bandits – EHL Premier) registered 27 saves in the tie.

Suffolk's (2-4-2) Justin Holliday, Danyil Medvedev and David Lappin recorded the goals, as the Rams were able to capitalize on two of the five power plays. Michael Levine notched 28 saves in the draw.

Even with an equal shot percentage in the first period, 9-9, Suffolk was able to capitalize on passes from Brendan Heinze and Stanton Turner to find Holliday for a 1-0 advantage at 11:03. Between the two teams, there were five power plays in the second period, where the Rams would connect on two and the Skyhawks would tally its first goal of the game. Suffolk scored its second goal at 2:11 into the second period as Lappin and LJ Fellows recorded the assists. Stonehill cut the deficit to one as Higgins tallied his first goal of the season at 14:52 in a power play opportunity, as Wright picked up his third assist and Jacques registered his first.

Lappin found the back of the cage three minutes after Stonehill, as it extended the Rams' lead back to two, 3-1, with helpers from Mikhail Bryan and Tommy Bishop.

Stonehill held an 11-9 shot advantage in the third period, as two late goals from the Skyhawks knotted the game at three. Smith slap shot the puck past Levine at 3:56 in the third period, as Scannell notched his first assist of the season. Less than five minutes later, the Skyhawks' Jacques tallied his ninth-career goal as Wright picked up his second point of the night and Godin, his first.

In overtime, the Skyhawks held a 3-1 shot advantage, but was unsuccessful as neither team was able to find the back of the cage.

Stonehill takes some time off before it hosts Westfield State University in its next game at Foxboro Sports Center for a 7:00 p.m. puck drop on Thursday, December 1.
