Freshman goaltender William Palmer makes 45 saves for Skyhawks
WINCHENDON, Mass. (January 28, 2016) – Freshman goaltender William Palmer (Cranston, Rhode Island/Boston Bandits) made 45 saves and senior forward Garrett White (Wakefield, Massachusetts/Boston Bulldogs) scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period, but Franklin Pierce equalized late in regulation to earn a 1-1 tie with Stonehill College this evening in Northeast-10 Conference ice hockey action at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena.
After over 40 minutes of scoreless play, Stonehill took a 1-0 lead just 3:17 into the third period when senior Willy Baker (Suffern, New York/The Hill School) and sophomore Tommy Newton (Hollis, New Hampshire/Portland Jr. Pirates) set up White for his team-leading eighth goal of the season.
With 14:42 remaining in regulation, Franklin Pierce sophomore forward Brad Riccardi (Scarsdale, New York/Wilkes-Barre Knights) scored with the help of junior Connor Mauro (Shrewsbury, Massachusetts/New England Wolves) to force overtime.
The Ravens outshot Stonehill 7-3 in the extra session, but Palmer turned aside all seven attempts as the Skyhawks extended their unbeaten run in regular season NE-10 play to 28 games (24-0-4).
Palmer, who was named NE-10 Goaltender of the Week on Monday for the second time this season, made 14 saves in the first period, 12 in the second, 12 in the third, and seven in overtime. This was the fourth time this season the freshman has made at least 40 saves with his career high coming last week against Assumption College when he registered 50.
On the other end, Raven's sophomore netminder Tom McGuckin (Clayton, New Jersey/Portland Jr. Pirates) was also impressive, making 40 saves in 41 opportunities.
Franklin Pierce outshot Stonehill 46-41 in the game, but the Skyhawks outshot the Ravens 21-20 over the final 25 minutes of action. Both teams were unable to convert with a man advantage, going 0-for-1 on the power play.
Stonehill (9-8-4, 5-0-2 NE-10) will be back in action on Tuesday, February 2nd, as the Skyhawks host Franklin Pierce University at 7:00 p.m. Franklin Pierce (2-14-2, 0-4-2 NE-10) will hit the road and take on Daniel Webster College on Saturday night.
