SUNY Canton Skates Past Ice Hockey, 4-2

CANTON, N.Y. (January 16, 2016) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey lost to SUNY Canton, 4-2, in non-conference action on Saturday night at The Roos House.

The Skyhawks held an early 1-0 advantage in the first period before the Roos rattled off three unanswered goals, including two in the third stanza, to halt a new Stonehill winning streak.

Senior forward Thomas DePoalo (Mendham, New Jersey/Morristown Beard School) put the Skyhawks on top, 1-0, with his fourth goal of the season just six minutes and ten seconds into the first period. DePoalo was able to collect a loose puck in front of the net and bury it to give Stonehill the early advantage.

SUNY Canton responded with three-consecutive goals between the second and third period and never looked back. Sophomore forward Josh Sova (Oswego, New York/Syracuse Stampede (NSHL) potted his first goal of the night at the 9:12 mark on the power play in the second period to even the score at one. After a goal from sophomore Tyler Ralph (Middletown, New Jersey/New Jersey Jr. Titans (EHL) to start the third period, Sova netted his second goal of the game when he buried the puck top shelf over the blocker.

Senior Robbie Dorgan (Ossining, New York/Boston Bulldogs (AJHL) brought Stonehill back within one score with his third goal of the season on assists by classmate Travis Army (Englewood, Colorado/Worcester Academy) and junior Brian Higgins (Milton, Massachusetts/Proctor Academy).

SUNY Canton put the game away at the 18:48 mark of the third period when sophomore Ben Beasley (Burlington, Ontario/Smiths Falls Bears (CCHL) scored on the power play to give the host a 4-2 lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Senior netminder Patrick Farrington (Sandwich, Massachusetts/Bridgton Academy) made 36 saves for the Skyhawks including 12 in each stanza. SUNY Canton freshman goaltender Josh Erickson (Woodbury, Minnesota/Kirkland Lake Gold Miners (NOJHL) turned aside 25 shots (12 in first period).

Stonehill (5-8-3, 2-0-1 NE-10) travels to Framingham State University in non-conference action on Tuesday, January 19th with opening faceoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. SUNY Canton (3-12-2) hosts SUNY Potsdam on Friday, January 22nd at 7 p.m.
