Three-goal first period fuels Suffolk to victory.
BOSTON, Mass. (November 19, 2015) – The Suffolk University men's ice hockey team outscored Stonehill College 4-1 over the first two periods to earn a 6-3 victory tonight in non-conference men's ice hockey action at Emmons Horrigan O'Neil Memorial Rink.
Suffolk led 4-1 after 40 minutes of action, but Stonehill fought back to pull within one goal in the third period before the Rams scored two more times in to put the game away. Suffolk narrowly outshot the Skyhawks 30-29, including 10-7 in the second period. The Skyhawks were able to capitalize on two of their power play opportunities, while the Rams went 0-for-4 with a man advantage.
Seniors Connor Fallon (Weymouth, Massachusetts/South Shore Kings - EJHL), Brian Furey (Quincy, Massachusetts/BC High), and junior Brian Higgins (Milton, Massachusetts/Proctor Academy) all scored for Stonehill, while freshman goaltender William Palmer (Cranston, Rhode Island/Boston Bandits - EHL) made 24 saves in net.
Suffolk was led by freshman Brendan Heinze (Danville, New Hampshire/Valley - EHL), sophomore J.B. Sweeney (Bridgewater, Massachusetts/South Shore - USPHL) and senior Tyler Heineman (Randolph, New Jersey, Randolph), who recorded two points each. The Rams junior netminder Kevin Venturoso (Franklin, Massachusetts/South Shore - EJHL) made 26 saves in 29 opportunities, including 10 in each period.
Suffolk opened up the scoring 14:05 into the opening period when Heinze beat Stonehill's freshman netminder William Palmer with the help of Sweeney and freshman Nick Mosher (Cumming, Georgia/Springfield - USPHL). The Rams doubled their lead just 13 seconds later when junior Danyil Medvedev (Boston, Massachusetts/Springfield - EJHL) scored off an assist by Heineman.
Stonehill cut the lead in half after Suffolk was whistled for a tripping penalty. With the man advantage, Fallon received the puck from Anthony D'Elia (Stamford, Connecticut/Gunnery School) and slipped a shot past Venturoso at the 16:13 mark of the first period. The Rams would regain its two goal lead with 27 seconds left in the opening period. Henize who registered his first goal of his collegiate career earlier in the game, scored his second on an assist from Sweeney.
Midway through the second period Suffolk was called for a hooking penalty, giving the Skyhawks a man advantage and a prime opportunity to cut into the lead once again. Rams senior Zach Capozza (Spotsylvania, Pennsylvania/Boston - AJHL) had other ideas, as he scored a short-handed, unassisted goal at the 6:33 mark. Stonehill fought back and scored two goals to open the third period. Higgins scored his team leading fourth goal of the season and Furey netted a power play in a span of five minutes to make the score 4-3.
Suffolk wouldn't let Stonehill inch any closer, scoring at the 16:39 and 19:09 mark to cap the scoring at 6-3.
Following tonight's game, Stonehill (3-2-2, 2-0-1 NE-10) will remain on the road and travel to Hartford, Connecticut on Saturday, November 28th, to face Trinity College at 4 p.m. Suffolk (5-0-2, 3-0-2 ECAC NE) will be back in action on Saturday, as the Rams are set to host Johnson & Wales (RI) at Emmons Horrigan O'Neil Memorial Rink.
